This is a Buddhist Deity, he/she sits on a throne, with a lotus flower base and turtles decorating it. He/she also had a nimbus holding a lotus flower. Can anyone translate this to English and what temple is this deity enshrined in Japan? |

A search for "Ichibataoyakushi" on Google and other search engines comes up with no documents. Thats because your spelling contains an "o" in the middle. If you search for "Ichibata-Yakushi", you will have the answers you seek. Almost every Internet reference to "Ichibata-Yakushi" will lead you to the home page of the Ichibata-Yakushi Buddhist Temple ( http://www.ichibata.org/e-index.html ), which is located on the Shimane peninsula in Japan. The name of the deity and the Buddha statute in the main shrine of this temple - is actually "Yakushi-nyorai". The name is often translated as "physician of souls," or less frequently as "master of remedies". (The story of this statues healing powers is told on the temples web site.) As a search for "Yakushi-nyorai" on Google reveals, some other Buddhist temples in Japan also contain Yakushi-nyorai statues. -justaskscott-ga Search terms used on Google: "ichibata-yakushi" "yakushi-nyorai" |

I believe that the Buddhist deity you're talking about is Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. In Chinese Buddhism, she is actually a man. Check out a statue of him: http://www.mfa.org/artemis/fullrecord.asp?oid=13969&did=300 |
