Hi,

I?ll give you two solutions: the first is applicable if the printer is
physically connected to the computer running Windows 98 SE. The second
solution is applicable if the printer is physically connected to the
computer running Windows XP.

Solution 1: the printer is connected to the Windows 98 SE PC.
First you have to make the connected printer a network printer. For
this, you have to do the following:

On the Windows 98 Machine:
a) Click on Start.
b) Select Settings.
c) Click on Printers.
b) Right-click the printer you would like to share and select
'Sharing' in the context menu
If Sharing is not an option you may have not enabled File and Printer
Sharing in the Networks settings in Control Panel
c) In the Sharing tab of the Printer properties make sure the 'Share
As' button is selected and assign a name (essential), e.g. EPSON, a
comment (optional) and password (optional).
d) Click OK.

On the Windows XP machine:
a) Click on Start, Control Panel.
b) Double click on ?Printer and faxmachines?
c) Right click and choose ?Add printer?
d) Click on Next
e) Select ?Networkprinter?
f) Select ?Search for a printer?
This way you should be able to find the printer, you can then add it.

Solution 2: printer is connected to the Windows XP PC

On the Windows XP machine:
a) Click on Start, Control Panel.
b) Double click on ?Printer and faxmachines?
c) Right click on the printer which you want to make a network printer
and click on ?Share?
d) Select ?Share this printer?
e) Click on OK.

On the Windows 98 SE machine:
"a) Click on Start.
b) Select Settings.
c) Click on Printers.
d) Double click on Add Printer.
e) Click Next to begin the wizard.
f) Select Network Printer and click Next.
g) In the Network path or queue name type in the path of the network
printer you are trying to print to.
If you do not know the name of the printer, click Browse and select
the printer you want to print to.
h) Click Next.
i) Keep the default name of the printer in the box.
j) Select either Yes or No on the Do you want your Windows-based
programs to use this printer as the default printer option, depending
on whether you want it as a default printer.
k) Click Next .
l) Click yes to print a test page."

The printer should now be set up.

Search strategy:
Google: ?share printer? ?Windows 98 SE?

I hope this is the solution to your problem. If you have any more
questions or if the problem persists, please ask for a clarification
as I am sure I can help you!

Paul, thank you for your answer. I had already tried what you stated
was the answer but the 98 machine asks me for the network path or
queue name & I don't know where to find that. Can you help?

Hi,
I'm sure I can help you.
First try the following: when Windows 98 SE asks you for a network path or
queue name, don't fill in anything. Just click on the button "Browse" below that.
Can you find your printer that way?

Please let me know, if you can't find your printer using "Browse", we
need to try something else.

Paul, thanks for your help bur I can't find my printer following your
directions. Do I have to do something special like create a network? I
have all three of my computers hooked to a router & all three are able
to access the Internet. I have the printer I want to use connected to
my laptop which is using WindowXP Home Edition. the computer I'm
trying to get use of the printer for is using Windows 98SE. When I try
to add a new printer I'm told to give the name of the network path.
When I ignore that & click "browse" I get the network icon & when I
click on "entire network" I get a message that the network is not
available.

Hi,
I am sorry, but that's an entirely different problem. From your
original question, it follows that your network is already working.
I have answered your question on how to set up a shared printer on a
windows network. I am afraid I cannot help you with how to set up a
network in the first place.
Maybe you can post a new question regarding that problem.

I am sorry I was not able to help you. I did the best I could
regarding your original question.

Thank you,
