Demidec,

Third question is the charm for us maybe? LOL... I'm glad I've got to
help you with your 2 other papaya related questions.

As far as tariff laws and regulation pertaining to papayas, let me
outline some of the different ones for you.
----------------------------------------------------------

You can read about the Japanese regulation for importing papaya here.
What are the procedures for importing papayas to Japan?

----------------------------------------------------------

Here is some papaya information regarding tariffs for Egypt. I
recommend doing a CTRL+F find search, and finding the word papaya, as
there is a LOT of information there.

----------------------------------------------------------

Here is some information on tariffs between Korea and the Philippines,
regarding papayas.
"Lorenzo said the country will also urge Korea to accept more locally
produced mango, papaya, and pineapple by lowering the uniform 30
percent tariff it slaps on the three items."

----------------------------------------------------------

#5 on this page talks about the tariff law and regulations importing
papaya into Thailand
http://thaifloriade.doae.go.th/hort_cd/html/Customs%20%20Regulations%20%20and%20%20Formalities.htm
----------------------------------------------------------

And last, but certainly not least, the US Department of Agricultures
report from January 2004 on January 2004 Regulatory Barriers in
International Horticultural
Markets
"Sanitary and phytosanitary measures adopted by countries to protect
plant or human health can affect patterns of trade in horticultural
products by increasing the costs of imports or prohibiting them
entirely. To prevent the protectionist use of such measures to shield
domestic producers from competition?rather than to avert genuine
hazards?countries participating in the Uruguay Round trade
negotiations agreed to multilateral rules to govern their use. These
rules have lowered many unnecessary barriers to horticultural trade,
primarily through requirements that regulations be transparent and
based on science. To quantify the benefits of continued regulatory
reform, further research is needed to assess the trade and welfare
effects of sanitary and phytosanitarymeasures in horticulture
markets."

That one should be your "goldmine" for information.

Third time's the charm, now I may go to Whole Foods and buy some
(low-tariff, genetically modified) papayas. =)
