How many papayas are consumed in the United States annually? Any

Demidec,

Hello again. I have some more interesting papaya info for you. The
following figures come from
http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/foodreview/sep1998/frsept98a.pdf
http://www.census.gov/prod/3/98pubs/p23-194.pdf

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

From 1977 to 1997, the US papaya consumption rose per pound, per
person, from .3 lbs. to .5 lbs. This is a 91% increase. So, at .5
lbs per person, with the population of the US at 269,490,000 million
as of Jan 1st, 1997. That would make 13,474,500 lbs of papayas
consumed in 1997 in the US.
269,490,000 people X .05 lbs = 13,474,500 lbs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you consider that over the 20 gap between 1977 and 1997, you can
take the 91% growth rate, divide it by 20 years, and get .0455% growth
per year.
.91 percent growth rate / 20 years = .0455
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, to estimate 2004's figures, from 1997 to 2004, there has been 7 years.
If you take the .0455% growth rate per year and times it by 7 years,
you get .3185% growth or, .32% growth rounded off.
.0455% X 7 years = .3185% or .32%
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So, take the figure 13,474,500 that was the annual US consumption in
1997, and multiply it by the 32% growth rate that we estimated to get
a 2004 figure. That would be 4,311,840 lbs annual projected rate.
13,474,500 lbs. consumed in 1997 X 32% growth rate = 4,311,840
additional lbs. consumed projected rate
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then add 4,311,840 to the 13,474,500 figure for a 2004 estimate of
17,786,340 lbs consumed in 2004 (estimated)
4,311,840 estimated growth from 1997 to 2004 in lbs. + 13,474,500 the
1997 figure for lbs. consumed in the US = 17,786,340 lbs consumed in
2004 (estimated)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as other countries....

1st of all, let's get a global fact
Humans consume 1.3 million tons of mangoes and 1.5 million tons of
papayas each year

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

And, Hong Kong
The six (6) most popular fruits imported into Hong Kong are oranges,
grapes, melons, papayas, apples, and bananas (by descending order of
popularity).
* The five most popular fruits account for 60% of total fresh fruit
imports into Hong Kong.
