My objective is to have (import, copypaste) existing graphical images
in EXCEL, and then
perhaps add data or info in adjacent columns, or even edit inside the
image. I have 2 sources, pdf files (acrobat, i have but i dont have
full adobe program) or webpage addresses, like
www.abc.com/image999.html (both "targets" can be saved to my PC.) How
can i do this and what does all the jabber mean in the EXCEL command
to "insert picture from file," then it tells me: CONVERT FILE dialog -
choose from "enhanced metafile, windows metafile, compressed enhanced
etc etc... can i use any of these to achieve my objectives? Partial
answers OK, tips for more. Thanks.

Fair enough, and it sounds as though you know how to use the
Insert>Picture>From File command. However:

This won't work, as pdf and html are not image files. As you noted,
Excel has a long list of supported image file formats, some of which
you listed, and only file formats on that list can be imported as
pictures. If you have an image file which isn't in a supported format,
you can download the excellent graphics utility Irfanview here:
http://www.irfanview.com/

You can save elements from pdf or html files, either images or text
blocks (pdf files can be generated such that you aren't allowed to
save elements of them) and paste those separately. For text blocks you
can either insert them into a cell, or (more likely) create a text box
(from the Drawing toolbar), which can be resized and moved.

There is one other option I can think of: open the file in the
appropriate application (Adobe reader or your browser), and hit
Ctrl-PrintScreen to copy the current screen to the clipboard, and
paste the image into a graphics utility such as IrfanView. You can
crop the image to show only the area you want, then save it in a
graphics format Excel will support. This will only give you a screen
at a time, however.

Hope this helps.

I have a strong feeling about not thanking folks for "helpful
comments". I make them from time to time on various topics, and like a
silly kid, i am annoyed if the "askers" don't say thank you.

anyway :-) THANK YOU for a very well put extensive reply to my
query... lotsa things to try, and think about. sincere thanks, J.
