Question ID: 348214
I am looking for a comprehensive compilation of businesses that
provide construction data in the US and Canada(bidding opportunities
and so on). Obviously many people are familiar with F.W. Dodge and
Reed, but there are others -- local, regional and national. The
information I need is the the company name and contact information,
service provided, the cost, and the areas
where the service is offered, along with an interpretation of the
strengths and weaknesses of each service provided.

Hello, marbuck!
I am interested in working on your question, but would be interested
in how many businesses you consider appropriate as an answer to your
question, given researcher hours and an interpretation of each
service? A comprehensive compilation is very subjective, and given
that there is no singular source that provides a list of construction
data services by state or region, this will require a great deal of
digging.
Again, can you provide a ballpark of the number of references you
would consider adequate as an answer?
 Thank you.

One more question:

You have requested an "interpretation of the strengths and weaknesses
of each service provided."

Most of the sites list the services offered for you to see, so it is
fairly easy to get an idea about how their services compare. In what
other way might you want these interpreted?

Clarification of Question by marbuck-ga on 19 May 2004 23:12 PDT
With regards to the 'quantity' question, I find it difficult to give a
specific answer as one issue is I do not know how many are really out
there. Obviously, I will look to see that the 'secondary' or 'local'
ones that I already know about are in the list (for obvious reasons I
do not wish to share that information at this stage).

The second clarification request delves into a necessarily subjective
area but I predicate it on the assumption the researcher is
knowledgeable enough about what people in the construction industry
want from these services including quality/quantity of 'biddable or
researchable' data, ease of use, and price (the lower the better).

The challenge in these clarifications is offset by the fact that this
information should be researchable on-line (these services generally
have a web/marketing presence) and of course that I have offered the
GA maximum with tipping potential.

Thanks for your clarification. One last question - Are you also
wanting to know about the various local Builders Exchanges, which are
not really businesses, per se, but they do charge subscription fees
for various services along with notices for projects out for bid?

Clarification of Question by marbuck-ga on 20 May 2004 01:03 PDT
The builders exchanges are less critical, unless they are businesses
masquerading as associations. If you wish, these can be summarized in
a brief reference.

Hello, marbuck-ga!

I believe I have found most of the major (and some of the smaller)
players in the construction bid lead industry, since I am now starting
to go in circles. If there are some small, local companies that I have
not uncovered in my searches which you feel are important, please give
me a head's up, since I will try to figure out why they did not come
up in my search strategy.

The primary difference in the better construction bid posting
companies is whether they provide an online view of plans and
blueprints. If online access to plans is not necessary, then the major
factors to consider are cost, regions served and the amount of job
listings. It is difficuts to provide a "rating" of the companies I
have listed, since I have not used them myself and it is hard to tell
how many actual projects they offer and their ease of use without
having a first-hand, working knowledge of the service. However, it is
quite obvious that some of the companies are lacking either because
they cover a very limited region, or have very few jobs posted for
bid. Therefore, when considering smaller regions, the Builder's
exchanges provide a good option, since they are local in scope and
usually provide some sort of online or nearby plan room.

Two companies that seem to stand out in terms of cost and plan
viewing provisions are CProjects and Construction Bid Board, because
they both have fair pricing and allow online viewing of project plans.
Unfortunately, they are both limited in the regions they serve.
BidOcean is also an excellent service, but is very expensive, as is US
Projects. Construction Data Corporation seems to be an excellent
service, but does not provide online viewing of project plans.

I called McGraw Hill to get a ballpark figure on pricing for their
service. In fact, I called twice. If the actual figure they provided
me is truly for an annual subscription to nationwide data (which is
what I asked about) then I don't see anything that comes close to
comparing, price and service-wise. However, if it was not the weekend
already, I think I would be tempted to make a third phone call. The
price seems extremely cheap compared to other services. For instance,
a quote for an annual subscription on BidOcean which covers the entire
US striclty for commercial/industrial building projects, came out at
over $10,000. The highest annual subscription quoted to me on the
phone for the McGraw Hill Dodge Reports is only 1100/year. If that
quote is correct, there is an enormous price discrepancy.

Again, I want to stress that it is very hard to make an accurate
judgement about "the best" companies without actually trying their
service. For that reason, I have tried to provide comprehensive
information about each individual supplier below.

(I did also include a few references to government job-listing
portals, but don't know if you are interested in those.)

TENDERS CANADA

http://www.tenderscanada.com/

"Imagine sitting at your desk and being able to read, from your
computer screen, the entire volume of information about a construction
project that you have just been invited to bid on. Next, imagine
yourself reading the entire collection of blueprints for that project,
online. Then, and here's the kicker, imagine yourself printing out
those 33" X 44" or 24" X 36" blueprints, or whatever size they happen
to be, on your regular printer. Not at 8.5" X 11" either, at
full-size. Would that sound like an innovation? We think so...

"Tenders Canada has been created out of the needs in the Construction
Industry for a centralized national database where Tendering
Authorities, Architects, Engineers and Owners can collaborate with the
General Contractors, Trades Contractors, and Suppliers during the
tendering and construction processes."

I don't know why those links for Construction Wire didn't work, but
here is another one to try:

Thanks for this work. At first sight, it looks like you have the ones
I know about, plus a few others. However, I will want to check this
out further before giving a final rating (will take a couple of days).
Also, the McGraw Hill quote does seem very low (although excellent if
right) for the full service as described, so this should be validated.

Thanks, Marbuck. Yes, I agree about McGraw Hill. I will call them again tomorrow.

Hello, marbuck,
I wanted to let you know that I have called McGraw Hill five times
this morning, either running into message machines of reps that do not
return my call, or receptionists who put me through to others who do
not answer. I also tried calling my local state rep for McGraw Hill,
and left a message with him.
I hope I can have some luck finding the correct pricing for you.
Unfortunately, it is like digging oil out of a turnip, since most reps
want to talk to the client specifically about their coverage needs and
are often unwilling to divulge pricing to a researcher.
I spoke with Construction Journal this morning, which provides
project leads for Georgia, Florida and the Mid-Atlantic States. The
rep refused to give me any pricing information, since he wanted to
know very specific details. I wanted to tell him he was losing
potential business, but held my tongue :)
While I am sure you already know about Construction Journal, here is
the information, minus the pricing!!!

Again, I truly hope "someone" from McGraw Hill will call me back so we
can wrap this up! Thanks for your patience.

Hello again, marbuck!

Well, I finally got through to McGraw Hill and spoke with Kendall
again (609-426-7876). He did revise his pricing, since he was not sure
what I had wanted initially. Before I give you his price quote, I want
to stress that he was very adamant about making sure you understood
that pricing is very flexible based on your needs. This would mean
locations of interest, desire to access online plans, etc.
Nevertheless, I asked for the "cream of the crop", which includes the
Earliest, Pre-Planning access to bid information across the United
States and Canada. For a service such as this, you can expect to pay a
ballpark figure of $100,000 - $120,000. A plan with a few less bells
and whistles would be in the neighborhood of $60-70,000. *However,
this can all be negotiated which is why a direct conversation would be
beneficial. And then, of course, there are quarterly options, and
plans with less services. So, that is the bottom line for McGraw
Hill!!

I look foward to hearing from you after you have looked over my answer!

Thank you for your kindness and extreme generosity, marbuck!
marbuck-ga rated this answer:5 out of 5 stars and gave an additional tip of: $50.00
Although I know of a few services not mentioned here, I discovered
several I did not know about. Also the pricing information and data
through phone based research have been helpful in understanding the
marketplace.b
