Hello space_cowboy

Have you altered the settings in the BIOS on startup? I can guide you
through these for the answer if you have not.

Hello space_cowboy-ga

As I indicated with my clarification question (and backed up in the
comments below by clowndevilboy-ga) I believe the problem is because
you have not set the CPU in the BIOS. To change this follow these
steps:

1) Enter your BIOS (as you did when you altered it before to make it
boot from a CD). This is usually done by pressing Del or F2 when
starting your computer.

2) You should be very careful what you alter here (if in doubt you
should read the manual for your motherboard)! Look for a section in
the BIOS about your CPU, in the AwardBIOS that is on my PC this is in
the Advanced section.

3) Now look for a section called "CPU SPEED" and press enter on the
number it is displaying. A new box just pop up with alternatives.
Pick the one that corresponds to your CPU (you have a 3GHz chip so it
should be something along those lines - remember that AMD chips run at
a lower frequency than what it says on the box - my 2.1GHz chip runs
at 1667MHz).

If you do not have the current value for your CPU you may have the
option of setting it to Manual. If you do you can set the CPU
Frequency Multiple to 9x and CPU External Frequency (FSB) to 333MHz.
333MHz x 9 is 3GHz.

4) Press F10 to save your settings and exit the BIOS.

5) Your computer should now restart and when you check the processor
it should say 3GHz.

If you have any further questions or queries on this procedure please
ask me and I will be glad to help out further.

actually i do see in the bios (amibios ver 3.31a) that the processor
speed is 1733mhz, it just doesnt have the right name displayed with a
cpu host freq of 133, but nowhere does it say CPU External Frequency
or fsb.

space_cowboy, you have already rated the answer to the question but I
have had a look for the additional question you asked anyway.
Unfortunately I could not find the answer in the search I did.

palitoy-ga Has the right idea! You need to alter the bios on AMD
Motherboards to enable them to recognize the proper processor speed.

Cheers!
