I have a hp brio model ba-600 when I install a hard drive on the
system It will not auto-install the drive. I have attempted to use
both wester digital 40gb  and maxtor 40gb drives and neither works.

You may need to download and install a new BIOS for your PC. Please
check HP first for the latest BIOS for your PC.

You just have to use the factory software to use large capacity disk
on older OS and computers.
From Maxtor you should use the MaxBlast 3 at
http://downloads.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_us/downloads/maxblast3.exe
From Western Digital you use Data Lifeguard v11.0  at
http://support.wdc.com/download/dlg/dlgsetup11_win.zip
