Hello - My daughter is getting married in the Catholic church on
12/11/04. She wanted to have Christmas hymns played during the Mass
but was told by the music director of the church that they cannot play
Christmas hymms before Christmas Eve. I'm wondering if there is a way
to find out hymns that are about days leading up to Christmas day? Or
carols that are more religious but again pre-Christmas? I did think
of Peace on Earth which will do nicely. Can you help us out? Is
there a way to find this out? Thank you. Jo Anne Bowman

Hello jobow-ga,

You are lucky that your parish is permitting your daughter to have a
wedding during Advent. Many parishes and other jurisdictions don?t
permit formal church weddings during the penitential seasons of Advent
and Lent. Even churches that permit weddings frequently have very
strict rules about décor, style and simplicity for this special
liturgical season. Be sure to check with your parish to avoid unhappy
surprises.

The rules about music in Catholic worship are nationally promulgated
but vary in their interpretation from location to location. The basic
guidelines depend on the liturgical season and on the type of
liturgical ceremony. To help you with your winter wedding I searched
for both Advent and Wedding music suitable for a Catholic wedding.
Fortunately, there are lots of resources available to help you. Many
of the sites I?ve found include midi files you can sample in case you
don?t remember the music from the title of the song. I?m sure your
music director will be happy to work with you to make sure your
wedding is wonderful despite the seasonal restrictions.

Wishing great happiness to you and your daughter.

CATHOLIC WEDDING REGULATIONS ? ADVENT AND MUSIC

Music for the Catholic Wedding

Music should be carefully chosen and should be suitable to the
religious nature of the celebration. The text or lyric of a song is as
important as the quality of the music. Just because a song is "sacred"
doesn't mean it is liturgically appropriate at a particular point in
the Mass or ceremony.

Below are suggested appropriate music for this sacred occasion. If you
are having a mass, you may want to consider music for the congregation
to sing.

Wedding Guidelines

Wedding during Advent or Lent.
Because there are seasons of the Church Year set aside for penitence
and spiritual renewal, wedding celebrations are discouraged during
these times. However, a wedding is allowed if it is in keeping with
the character of the season. If you choose to have your wedding during
Advent or Lent, the following restrictions apply at St. James Church:

1) No large wedding parties: Only the bride and groom along with a
best man and a maid/matron of honor may be in the wedding party. There
can be no other attendants such as a flower girl, ring bearer, etc.

2) No floral decorations or candelabra: Flowers may be carried and
simple pew bows used.

Weddings - General Information

Although weddings may be held in Advent (the four weeks before
Christmas) and Lent (the six weeks before Easter), we discourage
weddings during these seasons. According to the liturgical law of the
Church, weddings celebrated during Advent or Lent MUST observe the
spirit of the season. The spirit of these seasons is a time of
preparation marked by a simplicity of life. Weddings during Lent and
Advent, therefore, ought to have simpler wedding parties with respect
to their number and adornment. Only two attendants to the bride,
simple flowers in the sanctuary, and nothing other than a single stem
in the hands of the bride or bridesmaid would be simpler. The music
used at wedding celebrations at this time ought to reflect the
character of the season. Whatever decorations have been put up in the
church during Advent or Lent, such as purple banners or advent
wreaths, will not be moved or altered; those decorations represent the
character of the season for every celebration, including the sacrament
of marriage.

I presume that a Christmas hymn would be one that concerns the actual
birth of Christ. The powerful hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is about
anticipating the arrival of Christ on earth. I wonder whether the
musical director would accept this hymn.

You can listen to "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" here, as performed by the
Saint Anselm Choir:

Here are some more thoughts:

Many Christians consider "Joy to the World" and "O Come All Ye
Faithful" not Christmas songs, but songs for the second coming of
Christ. "Out of the East" by Harry Noble might do, too; it's about the
journey of the Magi. One interpretation of "I Saw Three Ships" is that
it also talks about the journey of the Magi. "I Wonder As I Wander" is
all about contemplating Jesus' birth, but not necessarily on
Christmas.

Hope this helps,
Kriswrite
