I'm curious about why Jim Courier and Marv Albert are doing commentary
on TNT, but not on NBC. Marv does TNT and NBC basketball play-by-play,
so why doesn't he do both for Wimbeldon, US Open, etc...There was also
an email address to send in questions for the announcers, but they
showed it so quickly I couldn't write it down. Also, why no Johnny Mac
and Chris Evert on TNT?

Hi,

The announcers you see on the different television broadcasts of
Wimbledom (NBC and TNT) are all contractually obligated to work for
their respective networks. They can either work or not work for
multiple networks depending on whether or not they have non-compete
clauses in their contracts. Non-compete means you cannot do a similar
line of work for the competition.

Jim Courier, for example is on TNT because in 2001 he signed a
multi-year deal with TNT to be a tennis analyst.

Marv Albert does Wimbledon because of a 2001 contract with TNT and
Turner sports. At the same time, he also has multiple contracts to do
basketball with TNT, NBC and MSG (Madison Square Garden).

Here's a brief history of John McEnroe, including his broadcast career

There's no reason to suspect that Chris Evert has a non-compete clause
with NBC ( her primary tennnis broadcaster's position) because she
also works for the BBC as a tennis commentator.

Thanks a lot! I've asked everybody what the deal is with announcers,
including Vin Sculley, voice of the Dodgers - he used to do other
events in the off-season (golf tourneys mostly), and he'd call games
in the playoffs with guys like Gariagiola (ick)on the network, but now
he's got an exclusive thing going with Fox, the Dodgers etc. Sucks,
because when ESPN Classic shows the Dodgers beating the Yankees in
'81, we're forced to listen to Howard Cosell suck the life out of the
last inning AGAIN! You guys are great, and I'll definitely use the
service again

Hi,

I can help you with the last part of your question. John McEnroe and
Chris Evert are currently commentating for the BBC. You will be able
to find information about BBC's presentation personnel here:

BBC Wimbledon Coverage (scroll down the page)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/tennis/wimbledon/bbc_coverage/default.stm

I tried to find an e-mail address for the TNT announcers at the TNT
site was had no luck. The are some biographies here:

TNT TV (links to announcers in left-hand column)

I hope this has helped

Thanks for the help! The links you posted had some interesting stuff.
Still have no idea why Our Jim has given up shaving regularly - he
looks like he just blew in from a surfing vacation in Thailand ;) It
makes a nice contrast with all the spiffy announcers looking like they
just stepped out of Hair and Makeup on a movie lot! I think Johnny Mac
should let the 'fro go again - retro looks are hot!
