Fictional Heroes and Heroines are often ageless but has anyone got any idea of how old Miss Marple was supposed to be? |

Hey there probonopublico~ It seems you have hit upon a rather mysterious subject; we may have to call in Hercule Poirot for the absolutely correct answer :) But, according to PBS?s Mystery page, Miss Marple was ?first described by [Agatha] Christie as ?a white-haired old lady with a gentle, appealing manner.? Miss Marple was already 70 in 1930 and must now be nudging her way into the record books.? (?Miss Marple,? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/mystery/detectives/marple.html ) Nonetheless, a number of other websites claim a slightly younger age for Miss Marple. ?In 1930 Miss Jane Marple was born as a 65 year old,? says Kindernet ( http://www.kindernet.at/agatha-christie/detektive/miss_marple-e.htm ) The Official Agatha Christie site says that Miss Marple ?was between 65 and 70 years of age when she made her first appearance in The Murder At The Vicarage in 1930.? (?Christie?s Crime Fighters,? http://www.agathachristie.com/essentials/crime.shtml ) Actually, Christie never concretely gave Marple's age, so any ideas about her lifespan are based on clever descriptions that made Marple seem ancient in 1930, but not quite dead in the 1970s. Hey Bryan, On that *other* matter, 13 seems to be the "am I annoying" magic number. Sounds about right, eh? I wouldn't mind having that handy program IRL for a couple of family members. Way older than Miss Marple, V |

Hi, V Many thanks for letting me know that you sussed it out! Yes ... It does seem about right. I shall be delighted to give you a link to whatever it is you would like but I cannot figure it out. Or am I being stupid? Bryan |

Miss Marple was a lady, and no-one asks a lady's age. Owain |

Hmmmm, Owain ... And how do you know that she was a Lady? I suspect that she was a woman with a past! It will all come out ... eventually. |
