How many manufacturers would you consider a fair answers. Researchers
are very reluctant to take on questions that ask for "every" or "all"
of anything since you can never be sure that you have gotten every
single "whatever" you're searching for. Also, there are hundreds, if
not thousands, of "low carbohydrate" or "low calorie" foods. What is
the goal of your research? The more you tell us about your needs the
more likely we will be able to find the information you're looking
for. Thanks.

HI,
In answer to your question, I believe that there are two main responses to it:
1.. There are not a great deal of manufacturers in Australia who
openly express an "interest" in low-carb foods etc;
2. As further background, we import & supply a product called
"xylitol" that is a esentially a natural sugar (see www.xylitol.com.au
for specific details), so we are looking for companies that want (or
may be interested in) the alternatives to sugar/aspartame in their
products. As xylitol is a relatively new product (at least in
Australia) we will almost certainly need to discuss the benefits
directly with them i.e. we do not believe that many companies will be
an "obvious" candidate for us from their website until we make contact
with them, unless they advocate a low carb/low fat direction in their
products. We are therefore looking for companies that may be
interested in alternative ways to get their product to market that can
espouse the many health benefits of xylitol.
I hope that this helps :)

You're right. There don't seem to be a heck of a lot of low-carb food
manufacturers in Australia, probably because the whole Atkin's thing
hasn't caught on quite the way it has in the US.
The main player seems to be Aussie Bodies:
http://www.aussiebodies.com.au/
Beyond them, though, most of the action seems to be with the low-cal,
low-carb product lines of more mainstream suppliers. For instance,
FrostyBoy:
http://frostyboy.com.au/home/home.aspx
includes a line of low-fat ice creams in their otherwise decidedly
not-low-carb product line. Most of the big-name food suppliers do the
same.
There are also food industry suppliers like Keith Harris:
http://www.keithharris.com.au/
who have well-established contacts in the food manufacturing industry,
and may be able to assist you with inroads to introduce your product.
Are these sorts of contacts helpful? If so, I can probably dig up a
few more and post the details as an answer to your question.
From what I've seen thus far, however, there does not appear to be
very many manufacturers with an explicit focus on low-cal/low-carb.
Let me know what you think.

czh-ga,
Thank you for your response. The number that you have found is a very
small proportion of the ones available - there is even one in the
Google ads on this page! Another one that we are aware of is at
http://www.empowerfoods.com.au/.
When we stated that there were a small number, it was meant in
relation to the US. The Atkins Diet, & similar, is very big here the
same as it is in the US.
Please let me know if you do/do not wish to go further on this.

Hello dsmackinnon-ga,
You responded to the clarification from pafalafa-ga regarding his take
on the limited number of companies involved. I haven't a had chance to
follow-up on the additional information you've furnished but I will
take another look. Instead of very few companies as likely targets, my
take is that there is an overwhelming abundance of them since almost
all food manufacturers are claiming to have some low calorie/low
carbohydrate products. To me, the challenge is how to limit or define
the target market you're looking for. I'll review the additional
information you've furnished to see if I can get you what you need.

cza-ga,
If it makes it any easier, here are some boundaries that we can put
around this at the moment. The companies:
1. Must not be multi-national.
2. Should have >50% of their products in the low carb, diet food area.
3. Be obviously targetting customers by way of their web advertising
in the weight loss/dieting/health areas.
4. Preferably be in the states of Queensland, New South Wales or Victoria.
5. If apparent, be considered to be a medium-sized business ie
$500,000 to $10,000,000. This might be a difficult one to ascertain
but at least worthwhile considering.
Regards,
