I have a small cryptogram that I need some help with. Here's the
text, although I might be off with some of the white space.

1 241, 427 HHAT
92STNZO5ONME
ON DAQT!

The original: http://home.comcast.net/~tedehrich/cipher-small.jpg

I don't have many clues for it. It was made by an amateur cipher
enthusiast and I was told, "If you can solve it, you can have it."

Thanks for any help.

mathtalk-ga,

Yes, character substitutions have already been done, by me at least,
and no luck so far. Maybe I'm missing something though.

probonopublico-ga,

Feel free to post any answer you may have. The result will be
rewarding to my friend, Bill. It's actually his stepfathers cipher.

Later Bryan.

This is far too easy!

But I'm not going to reveal the solution because it would spoil it for
everyone else.

I suspect that at least one of the transcribed characters you give as
letter "O" should be a zero instead. The use of the word cryptogram
suggests that a simple substitution cipher, involving both digits and
uppercase letters, might be tried. Has this been done?

probonopublico:

I think I have it as well. Do you have an e-mail address I could send
my guess to so we can compare notes?

I do not beleive it is a subsitution cypher. Here is my guess:

"One two-for-one, for 2 sandwiches at 9 to Stan Zeo 50 N. Maine on the QT!"

It is a take-out restaurant delivery order!

ipfan-ga,

Good guess, at least! I never looked at it phonetically. But that
restaurant doesn't exist in the pacific northwest (AFAIK). So if the
author is inviting me for burgers, maybe it's somewhere else.

I think that ipfan-ga may be on to something. Another possibility for
some parts of it is "at 92 Street" ("AT 92ST") and "on me on the QT"
("ONME ON DAQT")

This is the kind of thing that haunts researchers in the middle of the night!

Ok, here are a couple of new thoughts:

1241 = Want 2 for 1
HHAT9 = two each at 9 (O'clock)
2st = Tuesday
NZO = Enzo or Enzio (a restaurant?)

Hmm...that [427 HH] does work better as "Sandwiches" I think.

Good luck!

Hi, Ipfan

Yes, I do have an email address but, I am afraid, that we are not
allowed to communicate with each other through this medium. Sorry!

Like you, I believe that it is a phonetic note.

Well spotted!

Now, my guess (for what's it's worth) is that it for some place in Seattle.

But where?

My first two thoughts were character substitution and some sort of
number algorithm. Damn sumplicity.

Weighing in, I think that 427 HH is "4-7 Happy Hour", which fits with
2-for-1 as well.

So that would give you something like

1 2 for 1, 4-7 Happy Hour at

for the first line. Still stuck on the second. The third is surely 'on da QT'.

Hi, Ted

In fairness, Ted, I think Ipfan is the one to be congratulated because
he/she published before me.

Sadly, neither Ipfan nor I can take your money because, alas, we are
both mere Commenters.

However, some Researchers (those with hyperlinked names) have also commented.

So, its all up to you!

Very many thanks for the fun.

I do hope that your friend wins a free meal for two from his Stepdad.

Bryan
