Hello, needsresearch-ga! I have found the most recent information concerning privacy laws in the countries of the world, including Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Chile and India. The document Privacy and Human Rights 2000 An International Survey of Privacy Laws and Developments is available online at http://www.privacyinternational.org/survey/. This survey, by EPIC and Privacy International, reviews the state of privacy in over fifty countries around the world. The survey examines a wide range of privacy issues including, data protection, telephone tapping, genetic databases, ID systems and freedom of information laws. The report finds that there is a worldwide regocnition of privacy as a fundamental human right. Many countries around the world are enacting comprehenisve data protection law to safeguard individual privacy increase. However at the same time, privacy is increasingly being undermined by technical advances and the demands of intelligence and law enforcement agencies for increase surveillance powers. There is a strong need for improved oversight and stricter enforcement of current laws to ensure that legal protections are not ignored as threats to personal privacy increase. Click on the links for Republic of India, Argentine Republic, Federal Republic of Germany, Federative Republic of Brazil, and Republic of Chile for the most up-to-date privacy law information . Privacy and Human Rights 2001 is not yet online but is available from the EPIC bookstore for $20.00. Updated and expanded for 2001, the report includes new sections on genetic privacy, location tracking, authentication and identification requirements, electronic numbering, corporate sharing of information with governments, and the privacy implications of digital rights management schemes. The book can be ordered at http://www.epic.org/bookstore/epic_books.html With the interest you have expressed in these countries through your questions on Google Answers, you might be intrigued by some of the other books they have available. I also enjoyed researching your question concerning web advertising in India and Chile. You must have some interesting projects going on! Hope you can use this information to good advantage! umiat-ga | |

Some information so far

I'm sorry I couldn't complete this research tonight. Hopefully someone else can pick up where I left off, or I can resume in the morning. This is what I have so far: A group called Privacy International appears to be keeping track of privacy issues in countries all over the world. Unfortunately, the 2001 report is not online yet, and can only be purchased: http://www.epic.org/bookstore/phr2001/ For a quick report on the state of privacy laws as of 2000, you can review the online version for 2000: http://www.privacyinternational.org/survey/phr2000/countriesag.html http://www.privacyinternational.org/survey/phr2000/countrieshp.html ARGENTINA These are both stories about the laws, and the Digital Signature Law itself. Proposed bills: http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,48291,00.html Enacted laws: http://www.pki.gov.ar/PKIdocs/proyecto_de_ley_de_firma_digital.doc Digital Signature Law (spanish only) http://www.bmck.com/ecommerce/Privacy%20Data%20Protection%20Law1.html (privacy protection law, 2000) CHILE These are stories _about_ the laws, but not the laws themselves. http://www.hrw.org/press/2001/04/chilepress0418.htm http://www.hrw.org/wr2k2/americas3.html "The 2001 Law on Freedoms of Opinion and Information and the Practice of Journalism, known as the Press Law, repealed certain provisions of Chile's infamous State Security Law of 1958, including Article 6b, which made it a crime to insult senior officials." "Finally, the 2001 law repealed the 1967 Law on Publicity Abuses, which empowered judges to ban press coverage of court proceedings. While that was a positive step, the new law also imposed personal privacy protections that could inhibit the ability of journalists to report on the activities of public figures." Hi, needs research, http://www.gilc.org/privacy/survey/ which you noted contains an older version of information on the site I listed first in my comment above: http://www.privacyinternational.org -- it has information up to 2000, but not beyond. |
