Hi there. Thanks for the clarification of the question. If proved quite tricky finding this kind of information especially up-to-date information. However, I was finally able to find figures that related to the number of ISP's in each country from the CIA's World Factbook of 2001. This is their most up-to-date publication as of yet. [ http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html ] It provided also other data as well for example how many TV's, Radios are owned as well as number of internet users and ISP's. This data is provided for countries in the world. I hope these numbers will be of use for you. I've also put in brackets the number of Internet users in each country as well which might be of some use to your research. Chile : 7 ISP's (625,000 Internet Users) Brazil : 50 ISP's (8.65 million Internet Users) Argentina : 33 ISP's (900,000 Internet Users) India : 43 ISP's (4.5 million Internet Users) Germany : 123 ISP's (18 million Internet Users) I had another look at other sites to see if I can get some more figures for the year 2002. However, many of the sites that I found had pulled the country information directly from the CIA factbook, in some copying the complete page. For example: [ http://www.countries.com/ ] [ http://worldfactsandfigures.com/internet_isps.php ] Again another site which details how many people are online uses the same resource of the factbook: [ http://cyberatlas.internet.com/big_picture/geographics/article/0,,5911_151151,00.html ] I suspect that the CIA Factbook is probably going to be the most definitive resource you will find on the internet, at least until another survey is conducted in each country on their ISP numbers. The other issue to take into account is whether people will use one of the big international ISP's like AOL. Since the Factbook was published in 2001, the figures were collated from the previous year which mught not be of complete use for you. I hope that this will help answer your question. Active servers? Or even idle ones? Want a breakdown of which are a webserver, FTP server, music server, game server, movie server, well, you get what I mean.... Almost any computer hooked to the net is a server of some sort. With the newest breed of viruses, more are inadvertently becoming servers unbeknownst to their owners. So is this question particular to lets say, business & commerce (not particularly e-commerce) servers? Also, do you care about the mom and pop servers, or just the ones that 'serve' a certain percentage of the web populous [read: BIG] ? Care to narrow the request? -AI |

Web servers: see http://www.todocl.cl/stats.phtml. About 40.000 domains were registered and 20.000 of them had a web server at the end of 2001. |
