Hello, bears. I thought that alieninteligence.ga would follow through,
but I guess not -- so here goes.

The club you're thinking about is indeed The Odyssey, a then-famous
hangout for underage teens near the corner of Beverly and LaCienega
(and as you recall, right off the Beverly Center mall.) It began as a
dance club; later trying to make it as a rock venue after it lost its
dance license due to complaints from local neighbors. It burned down
in the late 1980s (I haven't been able to find the exact date) in what
was presumed to be arson.

There's a helpful feature article about The Odyssey, complete with
photos, on the TVParty.com web site. You can access it at:

In addition, you can read an article reviewing The Odyssey in its
heyday on the same site:

I also found a first person account from a club fan at this site:

If you'd like to read (at a price of about three bucks) more about
what the neighbors thought, you can purchase this article on the
archive site of the Los Angeles Times:

Ordinance Would Crack Down on Teen Clubs
The Los Angeles Times (Pre-1997 Fulltext); Los Angeles, Calif.; Apr 7,
1985; DAVID FERRELL

FREE ABSTRACT: Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky, who argued for the closure
of the Odyssey, said the ordinance would help prevent new teen dance
clubs from becoming a problem on the Westside, where mobile and
affluent teen-agers provide a ready clientele for such establishments.
He said school administrators throughout the area had reported
plummeting grades and test scores and student discipline problems
while the Odyssey was ...

I'm pretty sure it was called the Odyssey.
I'll check for sure on Monday if you like.

I called the California Historical Society,
they said they would call me back. Maybe
they will have the answer.

Yah, I tried to follow thru, but
the historical societies of California,
aren't the most helpful with, of all
things, history. I only got 1 call
back, and they said, "we don't know"
[California Historical Society]

sorry, but at least I got the name right
in the first reply ;-)
