Hi Jack72,
Thanks for the question. Computers that are donated to charity are
most often then donated by the charity to someone or someplace that
needs them, for example a school in a low-income neighborhood. Here is
an example of such a program:

Here is another example:
CARIBBEAN: AT&T Donating Computers for Regional HIV/AIDS Programs
http://www.aegis.com/news/ads/2004/AD040548.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In rare cases, a charity may auction them off and use the proceeds
towards their cause, but the majority of the time the actual computers
are used by charity benefactors. The government also auctions off some
donated computers and those seized by the IRS.

Here is the government auction website- there is a section on computer auctions:
http://www.governmentauctions.org/?ref=google&camp=8&keyw=computer_auction

Ebay and Yahoo now hold many charity auctions - you may be able to bid
on some donated computers there. Here is a list of online charity
auction sites:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A popular alternative to donating computers is selling them in bulk to
large wholesalers, who then sell them to the public or to other
companies at discount prices. Buying from one of these companies is
probably your best bet. Here are examples:

Here is one company that buys used laptops in bulk from large
companies that have upgraded their computers:
Recycled Googs Inc.

Here are some of the laptops available around your price range:

and

here is another:
Used Laptops.com
http://www.usedlaptops.com/

Here is a statement from this company regarding its purchase of
laptops in quantity from companies that have phazed them out:

Here is another used laptop wholesaler with laptops under $300

There are many more to chose from:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Google Search Terms Used
"used laptops" donated or donation
"used laptops" charity
"used laptops" companies of corporation and donation
laptops, donation

Thanks again for your question. I hope this helps. Please let me know
if you need any clarification of my response. Good luck!

Cheers,
