Question ID: 350961
Hi There !

The researcher, umiat-ga, compiled a great list for me several months
ago. This was a list of potential towns for retirement. I have
refined my criteria, so now I need a new list ! Could be from
umiat-ga again, or from another researcher.

Here's what I'm searching for:

Town population from 1,000-80,000
5000+ student university (university located within 15 miles of downtown)
Average July high temperature 82 degrees or less
Town not in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, Minnesota,
North Dakota, Oregon, or Utah

(I already have some possibilities in these states, including Juneau,
Flagstaff, Pullman, Missoula, Eugene, etc.)

A 5-star answer would be 10 additional towns that meet my criteria.
(If you find more than 10, there will be an additional tip to the
researcher. However, this depends upon meeting my criteria.)

All comments greatly appreciated !

Thanks.
ron

P.S. www.weather.com and other sites offer information about average
high temperatures in July. Thx !

Hi Ron,

I am working on your question and am using several references to
extract the data from. However, I have noted there are many locations
within the US which fit the criteria you have listed.

My suggestion would be perhaps narrowing down the criteria. For
example, which states you prefer, decrease the population of the
towns, and maybe limit the average low temperature for Jan.

Please let me know your views.

Regards,
Rainbow

Hi Rainbow !

Thanks for working on my question. I am happy to hear there are
enough possibilities to allow narrowing the criteria. I would prefer
to narrow the geographic area first and average high temperature in
July second. (Please leave the town population and student population
criteria as they are currently.)

In terms of geographic preference, I prefer the Southwest, South,
Southeast, and West --- in that order. I realize that finding cool
locations in these states is more difficult.

I am less interested in the Northeast, Midwest, Great Plains,
Northwest, and Mid-Atlantic states. Because of my flaming red cowboy
boots, Canada and New Jersey won't allow me in at all... heh heh heh

Please ask if you need further clarification. Thanks a million !

Hi Ron,

The following is the result of my research for locations in US which
fit the criteria you have requested.

These states do not have any locations which fit your criteria (mostly
because of their high temperatures):
Arkansas - Florida - Georgia - Hawaii - Louisiana - Mississippi -
Nevada - New Mexico - South Carolina - Tennessee

Regarding California: You will find a list of locations below.
However, there are numerous others and if you wish, I can extract more
for you. Just let me know. The remaining states listed below are
complete.

The format I have listed the locations is as follows:

Place - Population
Temperature
University (location) - Distance from
Number of students

(You will note some California towns have more than one university
which fit the criteria).

Rainbow---this is already a 5-star answer. Thank you!

I would be happy to pay you $5 per town for one to 12 additional listings.
This would make a total of $110 for this project ($50 original
question + $5 to $60 tip).

But like most things in life, there's a catch: I already have plenty
of possibilities in California. So the additional 1-12 listings would
need to come from other states.

If you don't have time to do this additional research, I will
understand completely. Without any further work, this is already a
top-notch effort on your part.

Thanks again !

Hi Ron,

I'll do my best to research this further. One clarification, excluding
the states you mentioned in your answer, would any other state suit
you? If not, please list the states you have no interest in. Thanks.

Best wishes,
Rainbow

Hi Rainbow,

Thanks again for helping me. The 1-12 additional towns can be in any
state other than Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon,
Michigan, Montana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon, or Utah.

I know this is asking a lot...it would be most helpful to me if the
1-12 additional towns were from several different states. The reason
is, I'm using your research to help me find places I might never find
on my own.
EXAMPLE: Boone, NC is a great discovery on your part ! I never would
have found it.

Having said that, I am not picky. The 1-12 additional towns can be
wherever you find them. Whatever is easiest for you...

Thanks again.

No hurry. I have a year left on my current lease. :-)

ron

P.S. I've already signed up for daily weather alert e-mails
(www.weather.com) for several of the cities you found.

P.P.S. According to www.weather.com, the folks in North Carolina have
been fudging their July heat numbers. Must be the Chamber of
Commerce. :-)
But the folks in Arizona and Colorado are right on the money. Thanks again !

Just speaking from memory, I would think Ithaca, NY -- home to Cornell
University -- certainly belongs on your list. It's a great town (or
was, last time I visited).

Ron,

I once spent two very pleasant days in Boone, North Carolina. It's a gem.

Thanks, Pink. Boone looks great by the numbers. Good weather, and
one of the youngest (demographically) college towns in the country.
Of course, I'd have to practice my drawl...

See ya.

Ron,

Here's a photo I took while visiting Boone that will give you some
idea of the kind of scenery that is commonplace there:

For folks who are tired of the hurlyburly of urban life, it's a heavenly spot.

PinkFreud,

You are The Best! Thanks for posting this picture. I'm slowly but
surely narrowing down the possibilities. Right now, it's a horse race
between Arizona, North Carolina, and Northern Colorado/Southern
Wyoming. On the one hand, the high desert of Arizona is similar to my
upbringing in Texas. On the other hand, I want to get married again
and a Southern Belle in the Bible Belt would be perfect for me.
Rainbow-ga has done a great job, and may find even more possibilities
for a new locale. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again, Pink. I truly appreciate it !
