I recently acquired a beautiful piece of pottery that was marked
"Christian de Beaumont" on the bottom. I would like to know something
about this maker and where to search for values. |

Is there a 'cross' on the bottom in addition to the name?

There is not a cross below the name however there is what appears to
be a signature incised below the stamp which is also imprinted into
the pottery. Unfortunately I cannot read it...but it is rather
flowing and fancy looking. This piece of art pottery is a low bowl
type pot (9 1/2" wide & 2 1/4" high) with beautiful brown glazing and
an applied large lily pad on a stem. It is beautiful and unusual and
seems to be of high quality. Thank you.

OK, we can try to narrow things a bit more. Is the piece an antique
or contemporary? There is more than one Beaumont pottery currently
producing work in the US. Interestingly enough, they are all "art"
pottery makers and their products are considered "collectibles" as
soon as they are out of the kiln.
I will first try to find if "Christian de Beaumont" is a makers mark
or the sig of a particular potter within a firm. It might also be the
name of a "style" manufactured by a pottery.
It also might be helpful if you can let me know what part of the
country you acquired it in? I am presuming you are in the US, if not,
then I'm on the wrong trail.

Hello again,
I live in the Northeast corner of Washington State. I purchased this
at a liquidation of a second hand shop that was going out of business.
He sold both antiques and junk and this particular piece had never
been in his shop. It gives every appearance of being antique but could
be a newer piece. It is a beautiful pot in an art Nouveau Style. the
quality of the design, style and glazing are outstanding. I could
email photos if you have that capability. When I did research I was
led to the Christian de Beaumont art workshop in Paris because that
was the only place that I could find the name. But, because of the
language problem, I just could not navigate the sites. I could go
back to the guy I bought this from and see if he remembers more about
it. It is such a distictive piece with a beautiful incised mark on
the bottom that I thought for sure I would be able to track it down.
Thank you again. Rita

As for emailing me photos, we are not permitted to give personal
contact information. If there is a place you could upload the photos
on the internet and publish the link, then it would be available to
all the researchers as well as to me. There are some sharp people
here and somebody may jump right to it while I'm still trying to track
things down.
LOL, I live in Ohio and there are three Beaumont potteries within a 45
minute drive. (all produce art pottery) There are also Beaumont
potteries in the Carolinas.
Do you still have the link to Christian de Beaumont art workshop? I
have found nothing under that exact name. I will run one of these
online translators on the pages to see if that helps. (online
translation services can sometimes provide hilarious results)
I will be in Zanesville this weekend and can/will stop by a couple of
the Beaumont potteries to see if they know anything.
If any other researcher can be of help or knows anything, don't let me
scare you off, jump right in.
Sort of part of the old archaeology game of chasing down artifacts for
which there is no provenance. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Don't give up yet.
Cheers

This piece does not look even remotely like any of the Beaumont
Pottery pieces I have been able to find. They all seem to have a
county or primitive americana feel and this is very ART NOUVEAU which
makes me wonder if it is not French. If you just search under
"Atelier Christian de Beaumont" you will come to the place that has
stumped me. Atelier means Artist's Studio and I guess it would lead
me to believe that this might be a contemporay piece from an artist's
studio of that name in Paris.
