Question ID: 351184
I have a server running Small Business Server 2000. Exchange controls
all our emails and faxes. We also have IIS running. The machine serves
about 40 clients, and the physical hardware the server is running on
has just about reached it's limit. I have a new machine in which I
want to run SBS 2000 on now, but I don't want to rebuild all the
accounts etc etc from scratch. I need a detailed step-by-step on how
to transfer the information store and everything else I might need to
the new physical server. Please let me know if I need to provide any
additional details. Thank you.

The server is also the domain controller.

Couple of questions here:
1. The 40 accounts you've is for Emails or for Domain login ?
2. What is IIS serving? I mean, are you running any website on this
server from IIS?

Let me know so that I can look more to help you out.

Thanks

Thanks for the questions.

The 40 accounts are for both emails and domain logins. The exchange
server doubles as a domain controller.

Also, IIS is only serving OWA (Outlook Web Access) for checking email
remotely. Nothing more.

Sorry for asking another question here.

On the new hardware, are you going to install SBS 4.5 and then upgrade
to 2000 or is it going to be a fresh install of SBS 2000?

Thanks for being patient.

If answering questions meaning getting a better answer, you can ask me
questions all day long...

It will be a fresh installation of SBS 2000.

Thanks dvati0n-ga for clarification.

I'm posting here couple of options that I was able to find after doing
extensive searching. You can try these options and let me know if it
helped so that I can post a formal answer with complete details.

OPTION 1:
"What is the best way to backup my SBS or Exchange Server?"
http://www.microsoft.com/sbserver/community/sbs_faq.asp

OPTION 2:
Try a similar approach as mentioned for SBS 2003 here-
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/upgrade/default.mspx
Search for "Migrating from Small Business Server 2000 or Windows 2000
Server to Windows Small Business Server 2003." on this page.

OPTION 3:
"Alternate Method for Migrating Exchange Data in SBS 2000 Migration"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;294430

Check this out too-
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6268-1042703.html

And also here-
http://www.12c4pc.com/sbs2000-4.htm

Let me know how it goes.

Finally, i got an answer for you.

Check this out-
http://www.smallbizserver.net/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=99
- Even though this relates to SBS 2003, you can try the same with SBS 2000.

"How to backup your SBS 2000 server"
http://www.smallbizserver.net/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=38

And finally this thread where a similar question has been posted.

http://communities.microsoft.com/NewsGroups/previewFrame.asp?ICP=GSS3&sLCID=US&sgroupURL=microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs&sMessageID=%253C%2523mJihjfQEHA.2100@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl%253E

Let me know if this helped so that I can post a detailed answer.

In the thread you found, all I could really extract from that
regarding my question was, "What one would do is add a member server,
run DC promo, after that separate it from the network and run SBS
Installation. You can then move over the exchange data via buck ups."

Speaking of back ups, since you pointed it out in your "How to backup
your SBS 2000 server" link, that is exactly how we perform our
backups. We have NTBackup backing up the information store
daily...maybe this would be useful in transferring the data to a new
machine?

The link "http://www.smallbizserver.net/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=99"
seemed relevant at first, but the example is upgrading the current
server to better hardware, keeping the same hard drives. I want to
move the server data to a completely new machine, and use the old one
for other purposes.

I also looked through your other links, "option 1" or "What is the
best way to backup my SBS or Exchange Server?", I believe I addressed
that above...backups are made daily of the information store using
NTBackup.

"Migrating from Small Business Server 2000 or Windows 2000
Server to Windows Small Business Server 2003." seems like it doesn't
apply to my situation, but if the procedures are the same, I'll take
your word for it. If I knew all the answers, I wouldn't have needed to
come here :)

"Alternate Method for Migrating Exchange Data in SBS 2000 Migration"
seems like it applies to me, if I could only extract the information I
actually needed...maybe you'll do that for me when you post an
official answer! Keep the questions coming!
