Problem with Norton Internet Security 2004 with Windows XP, running on
Compaq 6020US with Microsoft Outlook. I had previously been using NIS
2003 without any problems. Since my subscription ran out over the
weekend, I uninstalled NIS 2003 and installed my newly purchased NIS
2004.
Now when I try to send outgoing email, I get this error message:
"Error: Your email message to <email address> witht the subject <X>
was unable to be sent because the connection to your mail program was
interrupted. Please open your email client and resend message from
the Sent Messages folder."
I am then referred to the Symantec support page:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2002071214223706?OpenDocument&src=_mi
I have done everything on this one (and as far as I can see, only)
support page on Symantec's site. I do not have any other firewalls.
I've disable XP's ICF. My Outlook doesn't have the "Hang up when
finished sending..." button checked.
Worse, the "temporary workaround" doesn't work. Even after disabling
the outgoing email scan on Norton Antivirus AND indeed, disabling the
whole NIS 2004, I still get the same error message. I don't see how
that is possible, since supposedly NIS isn't even scanning the
outgoing message, but there it is.
I am otherwise able to connect to my ISP without a problem. My wife
has the same email server running NIS 2003 on an XP and has no
problem connecting at all. I've checked my email program via a web
interface and it's working fine. I am able to RECEIVE email just fine.
The problem is only with the outgoing email, which started right
after I installed NIS 2004. I
have no reason to suspect this is a server issue.
I should add that just installing NIS 2004 was a minor nightmare due
to another bug in the program, where XP's Add/Remove Programs utility
doesn't completely remove NIS 2003, causing you to manually remove
several components. However, the rest of the program (LiveUpdate,
etc.) is working fine.
The cost of getting technical support from Symantec is literally more
than I paid for the program, so I'd like to avoid that option.
Searching their database led to no answers other than the link above. |

Thanks to Peeyush for his suggestion. It led me to a solution,
although I don't know if it was the one you suggested. As noted
above, even when NO firewall is enabled, I was getting this error. I
had already disabled XP's firewall (ICF=Internet Connection Firewall)
and NIS's firewall, and had no luck.
I attempted to run the command you suggested, using my smtp IP.
Unfortunately, I don't know if the result indicated success. I get a
DOS screen with the prompt at my Documents and Setting's folder.
However, in order to run the test, I had to go to my email server
company's website to see what the IP was. In doing so, they had a
note about an alternate SMTP port now available (Port 24), since
apparently many ISPs (I have Verizon DSL) have recently started to
block 3rd party smtp on port 25. So I changed the smtp port to 24,
which they now offer. Voila! The mail is now going through.
I haven't verified that, in fact, Verizon DSL is now blocking Port 25,
but in any case I got the bugger to work.
So thanks, Peeyush, for at least inspiring me to a solution here.
