I believe I previously had my question in the wrong forum so I resubmitted here.

I am trying to find out information about the history of the
Stanislvasky theatre or it might also be known as the church street
theatre. It's address is 1742 church St, NW. in Washington DC. I am
trying to find out about the history of this building has been used
over the last century or whenever it was built. Before it was the
Stanislvasky theatre what was it used for. I really don't care about
the shows or other things that have been produced or played here just
the general usage of the building. If you could find any information
that would be very helpful. If you could also provide me a map of
where this theatre is located that would be very helpful too.

I contacted the theater and posed your question to them. They gave me
a very brief and very general run-down of how the building has been
used over the past 100 years, including the types of former occupants
and name of at least one of the former business/occupants.

Will this do?

Well that might be good enough. Tell me, is it a page worth of
information, or just a few brief sentences. Does it include a "link"
where I might be able to find more information on the theatre. Tell
me a little about it. I do need about a page worth of information.

I guess you can't just forward there e-mail message to me because we
can't idenifty ourselves and can't post each others e-mail addresses.
Thank you for your work you did.

Yes, you did a very good job on this but really I am still looing for
information about the history of the building unfortuntely. If you
don't mind I would perfer for now, leaving it in the "comment" section
and seeing if anyone else might come along and help me answer this
question. If that is Ok with you. If you could find anymore
information about the building that would be great, but don't let it
overwhelm you.

Dear stephenh-ga;

I?ll post this for you as a comment for now to let you decide if it
suffices as an answer:

The Stanislavsky Theater Studio is indeed at the address you mentioned
in Washington, DC.

(You can contact them through this link)

I have seen where the building has alternatively been called ?the
Church Street Theater? at various time through the years preceeding
the current occupants so I think this was actually the name of one of
the companies that briefly occupied the building in the 1990?s in the
days prior to the Stanislavsky Theater Studio.

up-and-coming theater companies, as well as other producers.?

You can find other references to the old Church Street Theater using
this Google search link:

The person I spoke to at the studio told me that the building is about
a hundred years old. Over the years it has been a gymnasium, a dance
studio, and in the 70s and 80s there was a resident theater company
there called, "New Playwrights", the occupying company that probably
eventually gave way to "The Church Street Theater". You will find
several dated references to that the New Playwrights theater
company/acting school using this search link:

After that endeavor vacated the building, and throughout the 1990?s
the theater building was available for rent to anyone willing to pay
the rental fee. In the year 2000 the Stanislavsky Theater Studio found
their home there and renovated the building to suit their needs. It
has obviously been there ever since.

Short of traveling to Washington and searching their records this is
probably the best I can do. At the very least it should give you
something to go on. Please let me know if this is satisfactory.

I think you really need to contact the building records office in
Washington D.C.. It may take a while to get the information you want,
but that's where it would be - or try the public library in
Washington, I'm sure they have a web site.
