How do I clean the GOOGLE autocomplete list? I access GOOGLE through
MSN Explorer 8.0 (Not MS Internet Explorer) on a Dell Dimension
desktop under Windows XP Professional. The normal methods for
periodically cleaning out the GOOGLE autocomplete list no not work. I
have tried to find any place in MSN Explorer 8.0 that functions like
the MS Internet Explorer Autocomplete-Clean and have failed. Also, 2
different commercial performance and cleaning software packages fail
to clean the GOOGLE autocomlete list.

Hi bucky9157-ga:

Issues such as this one usually require a few rounds of clarifications
and suggestions for you to try before we arrive at the final Answer,
so I hope you can indulge me.

Can you clarify what the "normal methods" are that you have tried? For
example, one of the most effective methods for clearing out
AutoComplete entries is to manually delete the entries from the
AutoComplete selection list that appears for the text field in
question (in this case, the Google search field). To do this:

1. Left-click on the field (ie. the search text field on the Google home page)
2. Pause, then left-click on the field again to pop up the complete
AutoComplete list
3. Move the mouse over top of the first entry in the list (but don't click on it)
4. Hold down the Delete key on your keyboard to remove entries from the list
5. When the list times out and disappears (before you have deleted all
of the entries), just left-click on the text field again to bring the
list back up, and repeat from step 3 until the list is empty and no
longer appears

So, have you already tried this method? If not, and if it solves your
problem, please let me know so that I may submit it as the final
Answer.

Well, manually clearing the list MIGHT be an option, but all comments
and notes I have found about the Google autocomplete list-box indicate
that it is a list maintaned by the Windows/Internet-Explorer (IE)
operating system software, and that you can clear all autocomplete
lists by going into the Internet-Explorer utilities section. I was
hoping to get this to work as an automated function. My initial line
of thought was that the MSN 8.0 upgrade I was forced to accept in
order to keep using MSN as my ISP might have changed the control and
maintenance of the autocomplete list out of IE and into the
MSN-Explorer program (if that actually is a separte program and not
just another name for IE). While all the MS and web help and support
groups have only directed me to the IE control panel, there is zero
documentation I have been able to find under MSN 8.0 autocomplete,
except boilerplate that tells me how great it is, but provides no info
about list maint.

Amazingly enough, MSN Explorer is actually a completely separate
program from MS Internet Explorer (insert raised eyebrows here). While
the original MSN Explorer was based on the IE code that was current at
the time, the development that has since occurred on both platforms
has been separate.

Several of the discussion forums where MSN Explorer is covered, have
had similar questions to yours posted with no resolution available.
Even the technical support folks at MSN state that there is no
equivalent to the AutoComplete>Clean function of IE6, built into MSN
Explorer 8.0 or 9.0, nor is there any indication when such a function
will be available. As you have already found out, many of the
aftermarket solutions that claim to fully support MSN Explorer, in
fact do not.

I take it then that what you are seeking is a solution where you can
clear the AutoComplete list for the Google home page search text
field, that is reliable and thorough each time you use it? If so, I
can continue to look for possible solutions.
