Hello rubles-ga,
There is a wealth of information available about the requirements,
salary levels and occupational outlook for Child Care Workers both
nationwide and for your local area. Your GED will be sufficient for
getting and entry-level job. If you want to advance you will have to
get some specific training in the field.
My research shows that there is a desperate shortage of child care
workers and that California has developed some special programs to
help fill the vacancies. Unfortunately, the shortage is caused by the
extremely low wages and poor working conditions which lead to
tremendous attrition and turnover rates. I?ve collected a wide variety
of resources to help you evaluate the profession and the conditions in
San Diego. I?ve also included some sample job postings from Kindercare
and similar organizations.
I wish you well for your career.

Professional Development - Child Development Permit & Matrix
Under the Advancing Careers in Child Development: California's Plan,
developed by Pacific Oaks College, the goal was to create a
coordinated state system that:
1. Welcomes people into the field from a variety of points
2. Offers clear career pathways with articulated training and credentialing, and
3. Provides a variety of incentives to stay in the field
As a result of this plan, a new Child Development Permit and Matrix
that provides a career ladder for child development professionals
emerged.

Child Care Costs Found to Be a Rising Burden
Study: The expense rivals housing for some working parents, group
says. Demand for high-quality centers remains unfilled.
Meanwhile, child care remains one of the lowest-paid professions, with
many child care centers losing one-third to half of their staff each
year. According to the study, the average annual salary for a child
care worker in California is $17,420. Despite huge demand, centers in
some communities do not operate at full capacity because of the
difficulty in finding qualified staff.

Significant Points
-- Preschool teachers, teacher assistants, and childcare workers
account for about 3 out of 4 wage and salary jobs.
-- Training requirements for most jobs are minimal.
-- Job openings should be numerous because dissatisfaction with
benefits, pay, and working conditions causes many to leave the
industry.

Child Care - Worker Salary
Most full-time child-care workers make between $12,000 and $17,000 per
year, and many work part-time, so they make less. Hourly wages range
from as low as $5.50 to more than $9.50. Earnings depend on the
employer, the geographic area, and the worker's education and
experience. Fringe benefits are usually minimal, but sometimes will
include health insurance and paid vacations.
