Question ID: 352350
I have four Nortel Networks BayStack 450-24T switches that I bought at
auction a couple years ago. I have finally gotten around to having a
use for them but do not have the root password. As far as I have
learned, a new password must be generated from the mac address. So I
am looking for someone who both knows how to do this and has the
capability of doing so. The mac address of one of the switches is
000181F57084. I'll provide the others if someone can actually
generate a new password for them.

Acceptable answers to this question do NOT include "Call Nortel" or
"Call a Nortel Service Rep". Nortel tech support keeps referring me
to their list of partners for my state and the list of partners for my
state includes mostly companies that cannot handle the problem or
companies in other states that want to charge ridiculous rates to come
and solve the issue in person.

Unless someone who can solve this happens to be located near Nashua,
NH, I need a long-distance type solution to this.

Howdy eqs-ga,

Have you tried the default password, both at the console and in a
telnet session?

Thanks! denco-ga - Google Answers Researcher

Yes, we have tried the default password, among every other obvious
password we could think of. It would appear that the company we
bought these from (Cereva) had some concept of security. :(

Can you supply me with the serial numbers and mac addresses for all 4
units? I might have a resource to get these, but I'll need those 8
pieces of info. Thank you.

The only way I am aware of resetting a Nortel password is to
unfortunately Call Nortel. I know it's not what you want to hear, but
when we lost the password to a Nortel router we had the only way to
get it was to call Nortel. We were able to go through the whole deal
with the support guys on the phone though and weren't referred to any
partners or anything like that. We also has a support contract though
which might have made a difference.

Sorry!

I tried the following on a 450 for which I did not have the password
and it worked.

"Power off , wait about 30 seconds, Power on...
Within 15 seconds type : NetICs<cr>
You will then be in enable mode... You should be able to retrieve the
password from the security menu.

(that is an eye in NetICs not an ell)"

I have 4 Nortel 450-24T switches here, and accidentally enabled the
passwords on one of them. Turns out the two passwords that are
default on these units are 'user' and 'secure'. If yours is still
default, that should fix it.

Here is the deal on Nortel 450-24T password recovery. Power Up the
switch and when the console port prompts for the password, enter
NetICs (this is case sensitive). Don't bother going to the password
page to see what the secret password was, and to change it because
this won't stop a request for the password on the next boot. Instead,
in the main menu choose "Reset to Default Settings". The switch won't
ask you for a password anymore. Reset the switch, if it didn't
already give you the Control-Y screen again (depends on SW version).
