well speech is a combination of things... lets use the parrot for example, it has been proven that parrots can talk and are not just mimmicing sounds. The test was done to a parrot where they would show him an object and tell him what that object was and the parrot would respond with the correct name of the object when the object was showd to him/her in a random order. Olso the parrot was taught to express his feeling like saying "im hungry please feed me" only when the parrot was hungry. The parrots ability to talk is obviosley stemed from abilitys in the paratos brain and body. Like the parot must have good hearing to be abale to repeat the sounds it hears and with that good hearing also relys on a section of the brain the prosseses that sound. As with humans and all anamals, the maner of speech is determind by what we hear and prosses and how clearly we can do so. |

as for how speech was started, since we humans are given vocal chords that have a wide range of controll and lungs to power them, im sure it was a matter of time before humans figured out "hey i can communicate much faster and better with these sounds rather then banging my fists on my chest and throwing feces" |
