Until a reorganization in 1972, the President of the NYSE was its
chief executive officer, and the Chairman of Board of Governors was
essentially a ceremonial position held by a member of the exchange who
presided over the meetings of the board. Further, there was no
Chairman of the Board of Governors until 1938.
First, here is a list of the chief executive officers (i.e., the
presidents) of the New York Stock Exchange between 1935 and 1950:
1930 - 1935
Richard Whitney
1935 - 1938
Charles R. Gay
1938 - 1941
William McC. Martin, Jr. - First full-time, salaried president.
1941 - 1951
Emil Schram
1951 - 1967
G. Keith Funston
1967 - 1972
Robert W. Haack
Second, in case you are interested in the mostly ceremonial office of
Chairman of the Board of Governors during the period between 1935 and
1950 in which there was such an officer, here is that list:
May 1938 - June 1938
William McC. Martin, Jr.
July 1938 - May 1940
Edward E. Bartlett, Jr.
May 1940 - May 1941
Charles B. Harding
May 1941 - May 1943
Robert L. Stott
May 1943 - May 1947
John A. Coleman
May 1947 - May 1951
