Question ID: 353639
With reference to David Bowie's "Scary Monsters" album, who exactly is
"Sam," as mentioned in the track "Scream like a baby?"

Oddly, although this question has been on my mind for a few weeks, it
has only just occured to me that "Sam" may be completely fictional.
But the lyrics of the song indicate someone with a certain status and
even charisma in Bowie's/the character's eyes, which makes me think
"Sam" must have a grounding in reality. Either way I'd love to
know...

Bowie is well known for being a fan of the playwright Samuel Becket,
so this may be an indirect reference to him, although I couldn't find
any indication that Bowie has ever admitted or confirmed it.
