Question ID: 353664
I need help with "Error 1606 could not access network location
%USERPROFILE%\Print Hood\". I receive this error message when trying
to uninstall Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. I also receive
"Error 1606 could not access network location
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop\" when trying to install the newest version
of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA). I am running Windows
XP professional service pack 1. I would like to be able to fix this
manually in the registry if possible. I would prefer not to do a
system restore. Thank you in advance for any assistance with this
matter.

Hi!!

I think that I found the solution to your problem; try the following
for the first issue:
1. Click Start and click Run.

2. Type regedit in the open box and click OK.

3. In the left pane, move to and click to select the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

4. Please click File, click Export and save the original on the desktop.

5. Set the value of Print Hood to: X:\Documents and
Settings\"user name"\Printers (X is your system root path).

6. In the left pane, move to and click to select the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

7. Please click File, click Export and save the original on the desktop.

8. Set the value of Print Hood to: %USERPROFILE%\Printers
(you can try, if not work, with X:\Documents and Settings\"user
name"\Printers (X is your system root path)).

9. Close the Registry Edit Window.

10. Restart the computer.

For the second issue:
1. Click Start and click Run.

2. Type regedit in the open box and click OK.

3. In the left pane, move to and click to select the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

4. Please click File, click Export and save the original on the desktop.

5. Set the value of Common Administrative Tools to: X:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Desktop(X is your system root path).

6. In the left pane, move to and click to select the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

7. Please click File, click Export and save the original on the desktop.

8. Set the value of Print Hood to: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop
(you can try, if not work, with X:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Desktop(X is your system root path)).

9. Close the Registry Edit Window.

10. Restart the computer.

Thank you for the suggestions. I made the regedit changes however,
the problem still remains. I'm both impressed and encouraged by such
a quick response on your part. I'm hoping that you can still help.
Thanks again

Please try with the solution offered in the following page:
"Windows XP error 1606, 'Could not access network location <Common
Administrative Tools>.All users\'?":

Clarification of Question by simon26-ga on 01 Jun 2004 13:36 PDT
I think you may be on to the answer. I've looked at this key before
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders. I notice that there is no entry at all for 'Common
Administrative Tools. I have five REG_EXPAND_SZ data type entries.
They are Common AppData; Common Documents; Common Programs; Common
Startup menu; and Common Startup. My specific question is should I
modify one of these to be 'Common Administrative Tools', or should I
add a new string entry as 'Common Administrative Tools? Also, when I
add a new string entry, the data type is REG_SZ. How do I add a
REG_EXPAND_SZ data type?

Clarification of Question by simon26-ga on 01 Jun 2004 14:23 PDT
Okay, I guess I've answered my own question as to how to add a
REG_EXPAND_SZ data type. It's been a while since I've done this.
I've added the Common Administrative Tools entry and followed the
directions exactly and unfortunately, the problem still remains. I
don't even know if a system restore would help at this point. I'm
open to any suggestions, not just editing the registry.

Hi!!

You must add a string value in this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

The string value added must be the following:
NAME: Common Administrative Tools
VALUE: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

Hi Livioflores,
I exported the list of services by saving as a text file to the my
doc. folder and this is what it looks like opened in notepad.
Is there a better way to do this so that the information is more coherent?

Hi!!

The list provided is unclear but i hope that will help.
Can you tell me the actual status of the following services:
Application Layer Gateway Service
Network Connections (appears to be Started)
Network DDE
Network DDE DSDM
NLA - Network Location Awareness

Take special account on these two services:
·Workstation
·Server
(if one of them are not running, start it and try, both services must
be running to let MBSA work).

And what about the internal firewall of XP?
Thank you.

Clarification of Question by simon26-ga on 07 Jun 2004 12:14 PDT
Hi,
Could you please explain the importance of these particular services
in connection with MBSA? In addition, why do you ask about the
internal firewall?
 Thanks

Could you please explain the importance of these particular services
in connection with MBSA?
One of the system requirements for MSBA is that the services
Workstation and Server must be enabled for running MSBA:
"System Requirements:
The following list describes the system requirements to scan a local computer:
Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.
-Internet Explorer 5.01 or later.
-An XML parser (MSXML version 3.0 SP2 or later) is required for the
tool to function correctly. See the "Additional Information" section
later in this article for more information about this requirement.
-The Workstation service and the Server service must be turned on.
-The IIS Common Files are required on the computer on which the tool
is installed if you want to run remote scans of IIS-based
computers....
...
Additional Information:
XML parsers are included in Internet Explorer 5.01 and later. If you
are running Internet Explorer 5.01 or later, you do not have to
install a separate parser."
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBK/tip5100/rh5154.htm

Regarding to the other services and Firewall is only to have a better
knowledge about your computer´s status. Note that I only suggest
changes for Workstation and Server services, for the others I only
asked for a post with their status.

This is really more a question for livioflores about how this Google
Answers website works; I wonder if you could comment for me...

What would stop the person who asked this question from following your
advice and withdrawing the question before you could "claim your
prize", as you put it? If the answer is "nothing would stop him from
doing that" then I take it you rely on the good faith of the person
asking the question to follow through with an honest reply, and I find
that heartwarming.

I just read the comment from graememcrae-ga and I also would ask the
same question. If relying on the 'good faith' of the person asking
the question is how the Google Answers website works, than I too find
it 'heartwarming'. Personally, I always try to treat others as I
would like them to treat me. Even beyond that, I especially feel a
strong sense of camaraderie with anyone who is passionate about
computers. Thanks for listening.

Hi!!

The answer is "nothing would stop him from doing that" so yes, I
always rely on the good faith of the person asking the question to
follow through with an honest reply.
But you must note that some type of questions that it is not possible
to be sure that the answer is correct, like this questions and a lot
of other questions related to computer problems. In cases like this
the researchers who think that can help, relying on the good faith of
the person asking the question, post info that could be the answer.
In some other cases when the solution found is obviously the proper
answer (for example when somebody ask for remove a spyware or an
specific virus) the answer is posted directly in the answer box.

Anyway, thank you for taking account of our "heart-warming behavior".

Regards.
