I'm looking for sociological/economic articles that attempt to
quantify the cost of changing jobs and the cost of moving. I saw some
articles of interest i the bibliography of the last page of this pdf:
http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/economics/staff/faculty/oswald/gpoeconomica01.pdf
The problem is I can't find them on the internet and I don't have time
to track them down at the library. So see if you can find the full
text of these or similar articles.

Ok, so I'm most interested in these questions:
- when people move to a new area, what is their "quality of life" cost
related to the fact that they don't know the area and they don't have
any friends
- when people switch jobs, ignoring the cost of moving, how big are
the main "costs" in the sense of readjusting to the new job, not
knowing any co-workers, etc

I know this sort of stuff is rarely written down as a dollar cost, but
Andrew Oswald (among others) has done similar analysis, such as
calculating the "happiness cost of a divorce" - that is, if you get a
divorce, how much cash would you have to receive to make you as happy
as you were before the divorce.

From the titles, I can't tell if these particular articles do much
analysis of the cost of moving. I'm not interested in housing-related
issues - I can figure out the cost of a house on my own. I suspect
"Family Migration Decisions" and "Why do firms reimburse..." might do
the kind of analysis I'm interested in, but I can't tell without
reading the article. You be the judge. If these articles don't deal
with my issues, it might be better to look elsewhere on the 'net.

They're ok, but could be better. Search around for half an hour and
see what else you can find. If you can't find anything more related to
what I wanted in my first clarification, your existing information
will be good enough.

Hello again Gnu,

One of the articles from the bibliography you mentioned is available
for download for JSTOR subscribers only; however you may order a copy
of this paper if you?re not a subscriber.

Search Model with Job Changing Costs: ?Eurosclerosis? and
Unemployment?, by Burgess, Simon M
Oxford Economic Papers, 44, 75-88.

Abstract

?The paper proposes a framework for studying the effects of
job-leaving costs and job-acceptance costs on labor-market
transitions. These are incorporated into a general model of on-the-job
search with null offers, quitting, and layoffs. It is shown that both
types of costs raise the duration of unemployment and the inflow into
unemployment as well as reduce the job-to-job mobility. The paper
generalizes previous results by looking at a wider class of search
models and considering all the individual's transition possibilities.?
