I need some basic formulas for acid stain colours for concrete
surfaces.
The formulas are usually based on metal sulpdides mixed with
hyrodchloric acid ,they react with the free calcium carbonate(lime)in
the concrete to create colour.A basic formula would be ferrous
sulphate 5kg
1 litre hydrochloric acid (330g/litre) 8 litres water. This mix will
produce a rust /tan colour in fresh cured concrete. I need a black ,
green , blue .

Dear Zoot,

I believe the first link will provide the information (except for
black).

Possibly useful compounds to create greens and blues.

Dear zoot,

An additional reference:

Patent 5562 765 Iron Manganese Colorant: Indicates that Iron Manganese
can produce black coloration in brick. I am sorry, but can't comment
upon the significance to concrete, but may be worth a small
experient???

http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=2&f=G&l=50&d=CR90&S1=4,962,006.UREF.&OS=ref/4,962,006&RS=REF/4,962,006
_____

Also here is the link for Patent No. 5286289 Combination iron stain
and coating for masonry concrete and like material and method of
forming the same: This does mention a black tint, but I am unsure
whether this would be the resultant color of the concrete.

I haven't managed to come up with the chemicals for all three colors
requested, perhaps another researcher might have better luck. What I
have located are two offline sources that seem to have that
information, a book and a video.

An ultramarine blue color may be achieved with a specialty coloration
sold for the purpose. "The blue is a sodium silico-aluminate and
behaves like Zeolites. During the cement setting the liberated soluble
calcium combines with the molecule of blue, displacing the
sodium and producing a white ultramarine."

Delta Colours may be a good source for determining which chemicals
might be used to produce which colors for these formulas. Perhaps
another of our researchers can pick up and run with this:

Possible Offline Sources:

A video, The Acid Stained Concrete Floor Secrets of the Pros, by Gail
Goodman of Faux Real is available for $39.95 at:

http://www.bridgeworks.com/products/fr001.html

The video advertising proclaims the following information:

This professionally made 20-minute video covers in-depth:

· Slab preparation, crack sealing, and contamination removal
· Masking to protect walls and woodwork
· Staining to get the colors you want
· Sealing the floor to protect the stain and
· Waxing to get a perfect, glowing stained floor every time.

A book, entitled "How to Work With Concrete and Masonry", by Darrell
Huff, perhaps available in your library, or used, from Amazon.com
($1.99 - $3.95) lists how to color concrete in the table of contents.

Hi zoot:

Finding the formulas proved to be tricky, but I wanted to pass on what
I found. This book on concrete countertops looks very promising:
