The best solution for the following problem would be appreciated.
A door that serves as a screen door in the summer and a storm door in
the winter separates the main door to the house and the outside. We
have attached a hydraulic door closer to this door in order to make it
close gradually and smoothly rather than slamming shut. It has an
adjustment screw that loosens or tightens to control the speed and
force at which the door closes, but no matter how carefully it is
adjusted it invariably results in some slamming of the door. For
example the door might close very gracefully and gently until it
reaches about 2 to 3 inches from the door frame, and then WHAM! (It
will, on the other hand, prevent the door from closing if
overtightened). We have replaced this door closer once or twice, but
the behavior is the same.
I am looking for an answer to this problem in a recommendation for a
specific door closer, specifications, and detailed instructions for
adjusting it properly, if necessary, as long as the result solves the
issue.
The door is made of aluminum, I believe, and as mentioned, has screens
installed in the summer, and glass panes installed during the winter.
I can provide more information about the door and its dimensions if called for.
