Hi!!
Which version of Ghost are you using? Please read the following:
"Cloning to or from a USB hard drive or other external device:
Symantec Ghost 8.0 and Norton Ghost 2003 support USB 1.1 and USB 2
connections for cloning operations that work with an external storage
device such as an external USB hard drive.
For this type of cloning operation, use a Ghost Virtual Partition or
the Ghost "USB Devices" bootable floppy disk. The option "USB Devices"
is available only in the Symantec Ghost 8.0 and Norton Ghost 2003
versions of the Ghost Boot Wizard.
Some problems using USB and FireWire in Norton Ghost 2003 were
resolved in the November 1, 2002 update to Ghost. To prevent these
problems, run LiveUpdate to update Norton Ghost 2003 to the latest
version. Read the document Updates to Norton Ghost 2003. These
problems are not present in Symantec Ghost 8.0.
- Earlier Ghost versions:
Norton Ghost 2002, Symantec Ghost 7.5, and earlier Ghost versions do
not support cloning over a USB connection to an external storage
device.
- Older Ghost versions:
Symantec Ghost 7.5 and earlier, and Norton Ghost 2002 and earlier
cannot write an image file directly to an external USB device, such as
a USB CD-R/RW drive. Ghost requires DOS drivers for accessing external
devices, and most external USB devices do not have DOS drivers."
From "Ghost compatibility with external USB devices":
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/2000101617144125?Open&src=&docid=2002030414141625&nsf=ghost.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
As an alternative (or provisional) method you can image the system
disk to another partition in the HD installed in your PC, then copy
the image files to the external USB using Windows Explorer after the
imaging is complete.
If this gives you enough info to solve your problem, let me know and I
will post this request in the answer box, if not also let me know to
continue the research.
Regards.

I am using Ghost 2003 but my live update does not work.
My ghost image is pretty big - 4 to 5 segments,(8GB plus)but I will
try the two step method you suggest.
I have looked breifly for update and advice from Symamtec without joy.
Can you give a reference file I could look for lacking live update.
