Hello dablinkguy-ga:

I went to Charter's main site and then to their jobs page and filled
in an application to be an installer in Turlock, CA:
http://www.recruitingsite.com/csbsites/charter/JobDescription.asp?JobNumber=82303

But I couldn't get the actual salary, just the benefits (which, it
appears, are applicable to all Charter employees):
http://www.charter.com/aboutus/careers/benefits2.asp#basic
This is a pretty solid, enticing benefits package, btw.

I did manage to find good ballpark salary figures at the 2003
Directory of California Local Area Wages:
http://www.calmis.ca.gov/file/occup$/DCLAW$.htm

At that directory I found "Median Salaries for TV and Cable Installers in CA":
http://www.calmis.ca.gov/file/occup$/ccoiswages/dclaw.cfm?occupation_code=857020

You can see that in the years 2001 and 2002, entry-level cable
installers in North Central CA and the greater Sacramento area earned
a median of about $9.50 an hour. (Not surprisingly, cable installers
who belong to a union who earn more.)

At the far right of that chart you'll see that, after three years, the
median salary for California cable TV installers goes up to between
$14-24 an hour, with the high being $37.50 per hour in San Mateo for
Union installers.

At Golden State Careers' "Telephone and Cable TV Installers and Repairers":
http://californiacareers.info/CALGOLD2/calcareer/tv_inst.html:
You can see that the median hourly wage for an entry-level installer is $10.61.

At California's "Employment Development Department's" OES
(Occupational Employment Statistics):
http://www.calmis.ca.gov/file/occup$/oeswages/MERC$oes.htm

For Merced County, CA, 2002:
"Electronic Home Entertainment Equipment Installers and Repairers"
entry level wage is $10.55, and the "mean annual wage" is $27,076.

So, it's a pretty consistent estimate of *about* $10-11 an hour

As I understand it, many Charter employees have been mobilizing to
allow workers to join labor unions, but I can't find any evidence that
Charter's California installers are in a union.

Tomorrow I will contact Charter Communications and ask if their
California installers are unionized (being in a union will likely up
the pay scale), and what the entry-level pay is for their installers
in Turlock and/or northcentral CA.

It's likely they'll address the matter of whether installers in CA are
in a labor union, but I doubt very much they'll give me a precise
salary figure. (I am honor-bound to identify myself as a researcher
with Google Answers. I can't pretend to be an actual applicant so that
they'll give me the precise salary figure!)
