Hi firedancer, Following are three excellent illustrated guides on how to graft grapevines - there are several techniques to choose from depending on your particular circumstances. 1) Northwest Berry and Grape Information Network: An Illustrated Guide to Field Grafting Grapevines: Sidewhip Grafting: Pre-Grafting Preparation The Grafting Process Post-Grafting Care Additional Considerations http://berrygrape.oregonstate.edu/fruitgrowing/grapes/graft/graft1.htm 2) The University of California Cooperative Extension: Grafting Grapevines: Cleft, Notch, Bark, and Green Grafting techniques. http://cetulare.ucdavis.edu/pubgrape/gv698.htm 3) Maryland Grape Growers Association: Field Grafting to Change Varieties: a variation of Bark Grafting: http://www.marylandwine.com/mgga/growing/grafting/01.html "The best way to graft grapes is to use a "T" bud. It can be used on both old as well as young vines. The key to making the technique work is to make a "bleed cut" about one to two inches below the "T" cut. In this way the vine bleeds at this cut and not at the "T" above. If the vine bleeds at the "T" cut, the bud cannot heal." "This technique is best used in early to mid-spring; do not try too early though as the sap from the vine will be excessive. You will need to cut and store buds in January or February." http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/plantanswers/fruit/grapegraft.html Plant Propagation: An Overview of Asexual Reproduction: Grafting and Budding: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/propagation/propagation.html T or Shield Budding: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/propagation/budding/budding.html I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please post a clarification request before closing/rating my answer and I'll be happy to reply.
