In theory there is no difference, but judges and juries are typically
more sypathetic to the abused woman than to the abused man, no matter
what form the violence takes. Some discrimitory statutes are still on
the books, but lawyers are careful not to mention them as they are
likely to be found unconstitutional. Outside the USA difference are
more common. Neil

To be such a prolific commenter I'd expect you to eventually offer
something of value. I'm curious to know, how does one become an expert
on what people "typically" do in every single aspect of life? Good
grief, man...

I have actually discovered there are both remarkable diferences and
simialrities between men and women perpetrators of D.V and it depends
whether you take a qualitative or quantiative approach to researching
the issue. To keep it basic, most literature stresses that rates of
frequency of perpetrating abuse by either gender are very similar,
however the rates per gender differ in regards to motivations, methods
and overall results. It also depends on the theoretical context in
which you examine the issue.

Since every perpetrator is unique, they're all different. In terms of
dealing with them, however, they should all be thought of in the same
light -- they're psychophatic dangers to society both in the short
term and the long term.
