Our artists would like to use Adobe Illustrator 9 but there is a print
feature unavailable to us. The artwork is large, (36 by 72) and we
need to print a proof on legal size paper (8.5 x 14). Some software
such as CorelDraw offers a fit to page option and the artwork is
automatically scaled and printed to the smaller paper. Adobe
Illustrator, in its Windows 98 implementation appears not to have
this. Nor does Adobe Acrobat version 4 or 5. However, this feature
is present in the Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 implementations.
Our question is: Using Adobe Illustrator 9 on Windows 98 how do we
print using fit to page.
It does not seem to matter what printer we use. They are the HP5000
PS and a Savin 38c. We have tried non-postscript drivers with no
luck.
What can we do aside from upgrading the operating system? |

Have you tried marqueeing everything, then Object, Transform, Scale:
set preview, then establish a % an see how that fits to a print sheet.
When you get it all within printable area, click Ok and print. Would
that work for you? Thanks!

Your suggestion is to scale the art down to the proof page size, print
and then re-scale back to production size. We had considered it but
were look for a more elegant solution. Certainly, your suggestion is
a valid answer but we were hoping thered be
a button or function
somewhere. Perhaps a patch or download. An improved driver? It
confounds us that this feature is lacking.

I searched the Adobe Support Forums and this appears to be what other
users are doing. Let me know if I can post this as the answer or you
can wait and see if other researchers can find other methods of
accomplishing it. Thanks.

Hi Xemion-ga,
I would like to wait another 24 hours to see if anything unexpected
appears. After that I will gladly consider the question resolved with
you as the answerer. This is my first question on Google so please
bear with a newbie - I hope I am still within good practice asking you
to wait. Thank you for your efforts on our behalf. While I had hoped
for a different answer there remains little doubt that yours is the
most practical one. We will probably move to a different operating
system.

No, interpat, that is completely unreasonable and I would actually
prefer that you wait 24 hours. It keeps me from looking stupid just
in case another researcher does find a download or patch :-) I hope
someone is able to find a better answer for you. What's best for the
customer is best for me. Thanks!
