Question ID: 35505
We use an old application created with Visual Fox Pro 3.0 under
Windows 95.
We want to upgrade the computers, office suite and operating systems
to newer versions. The new OS will be Windows 2000 Professional, the
new Office suite will be either Office 2000 or Office XP. We want to
keep our old Visual Fox Pro 3.0 application because it suits our
needs. This application uses also Winword 6.0 (through OLE links I
think) to generate some word documents.

But we are facing a problem : when we install Windows 2000
Professional SP2, Word 6.0, Visual Fox Pro 3.0, our fox based
application (and eventually Office 2000 or XP) from scratch on a new
PC, the fox based application generates errors (insuficient memory)
when doing some tasks (parsing another table).

I know it can works, because it works on 2 others PC on which Windows
2000, Office 2000, and some others stuff (Interbase Server, Sales
Logix, etc) were installed 1 or 2 years ago. On this PCs the Fox based
application is running very fine, and the links with Word 6 also.

I am not able to determine the right way to install all this software.
I understand this won't be supported by Microsoft, but I know it can
works !!!

Maybe this is an ODBC problem ?

Do you know a correct way to allow Visual Fox Pro 3.0 (and my
application) to work fine under Windows 2000 (and Office 2000 or XP,
and Word 6).

Thank you.

You say you are having trouble with the installations on a New PC. Are
you installing all the of available Service packs and critical updates
before trying to install your other software?

Clarification of Question by elfeclair-ga on 01 Jul 2002 14:06 PDT
About service packs ...
Yes I have installed SP2 of Windows 2000.
I have also tested with SP2SRP1 of Windows 2000.
And I have installed SR1a and SP2 of Office 2000 when I have installed it.

I am not aware of service packs of Visual Fox Pro 3.0

Hello elfeclair-ga!

I am a Foxpro specialist and can (hopefully) help you in solving your
problem. I need a little more information to get a better handle on
this problem:

1. First I need little more information on this foxpro application?
You mention ODBC: Does it use Foxpro based database containers and
tables, or is it connecting to another type of database?

2. Does it access the database it's using over the network or is it
local to the PC's hard drive?

3. How do you install the foxpro application?

4. Does the machine that is being set up match or exceed the
configuration of the other computers running this application?

5. What kind of 'parsing' to the other table is it doing? Please
step me through the process of what this application does.

Thanks!

Hello nishka-ga,

I am not a Foxpro specialist, so I may mismatch some notions (ODBC,
tables, etc.)

1) This application uses a Foxpro database. It is not connected to
another database. But it is connected to Word 6 to create invoices.

2) The database is on a shared disk accessed through the network.
There is no Foxpro server. The shared disk is on a Windows NT 4 SP6a
server.

3) The application is installed in 2 steps :
 - Installation of Foxpro 3.0 :
 - Deletion of the newly installed Foxpro 3.0 folder, this folder is
remplaced by the one comming with the application.
I think, the first step is needed for the shared libraries and the
registry configuration.

4) The machine on which the application doesn't run is an Asus
computer (Asus Terminator Tualatin):
 - Processor : Intel Celeron 950 Mhz
 - Memory : 256 Mb
 - OS Windows 2000 SP2

The machine who is running the application is a Dell laptop (Daltitude
CPi R400)
 - Processor : Intel Pentium II 400 Mhz
 - Memory : 128 Mb
 - OS Windows 2000 SP2

So the machine that is being setup exceeds the configuration of the
other computer running this application.

5) I am not the author of this application, so I can not explain you
how it works internally. But globally it seems to be a standard
application with a customers ,products, reminders and an automatic
creation of invoices by using Word 6.

Feel free to ask me some more clarifications.

If needed I can send you the application.

Thank you.

Thank you for your clarification. We're slowly getting there :). I'd
love to be able to take a look at the program, but unfortunately I am
not allowed to give out my personal contact information, nor can I
request the same of you. I will send a note to the Google Answers
editors to see if you can upload the program to a neutral web or FTP
site for me to take a look at.

I have a few more clarification questions for you while I'm waiting to
hear back from my editors:

1. Did you follow the same installation procedure on the working
laptop as you did on the non-working desktop? That first step looks a
little suspect to me.

2. I'd like for you to tell me what the error is verbatim. Type it
out and let me know exactly what your screen says.

3. When the error occurs, does it allow you to 'ignore,' 'debug,'
etc?

Let me know and I will post a clarification if you can upload the
program to a neutral web or FTP site.

Thank you for your quick answers !

1) I have followed the same installation steps during the visual
foxpro and application instalation on each machine. But the installed
software is not the same on each machine. On the working machine some
others software were already installed.

2) I can not give you the _exact_ error message and possible actions
now. I am reinstalling the machine again, and I can't test it now.
I will give you the answer tomorrow.
Thank you !

Thanks!

Hello nishka-ga,

Yes, I have made progress in the reinstallation, but unfortunatly, the
problem is still not solved.

2) The error is "Mémoire insuffisante pour l'opération en cours". Yes
this a french version of windows 2000 and of Visual Foxpro 3.0. The
meaning is "Insufficient memory for the current task."

3) When the error occures 3 buttons are available in the error
message: "Annuler" "Ignorer" and "Aide", which means "Cancel" "Ignore"
"Help".
If I click "Cancel", the program ends.
If I click "Ignore", in some repeatable cases the programs continues
and runs the tasks, or the programs repeatedly shows the same error
message with the same 3 buttons.
If I click "Help, nothing happens.

I am sorry for this late answer, but I have been busy ...

Thank you.

Thanks for your follow up response.

If possible, could you upload the code to an ftp or website so other
competing researchers and myself can take a look at it? I have a
feeling if I can trace through what it's doing I should be able to
figure out the problem.

Please do not upload the visual foxpro software as that is a
copyrighted piece of software. Just upload the in-house code you're
using.

Thanks!

Thanks for your time.

Yes I am able to put the application on an FTP server.

The URL is : <ftp://ftp.lexiquest.fr>
User : ga
Password : mayarama

If you see several folders, the right one is the folder "pub".

I have created a file (readme.txt) with the way of installation and
testing.

Please tell me when you will have these files downloaded, so I can
delete the files on my side.

Thank you

I think a better way will be employing a person to rewrite the
application in Visual Basic, or at least, upgrade to Visual FoxPro
6.0. We used to have a similar problem that cannot be explained, and
my boss decided to opt out from Visual FoxPro and move to Visual Basic
with MS Access 2000. So far so good.

The solution was to upgrade to Visual Fox Pro 8.
The application has been adapted and now is working perfectly.
