Question ID: 355278
I am looking for minor modifications I can do to a car to increase
horsepower. I currently have 126 at the crank and would maby like to
increase it 20-35 horsepower. Any ideas besides the basic intake,
exhaust and chip ? I am looking for light mods, nothing engine or
major. It would be good if it was under $50 but up to $100 is ok. I
have no problem buying the parts on eBay, as I have done that many
times. The car is a 03 Nissan Sentra, but I might get a 96 Civic too.

Well, considering HP comes from the motor...........
Removing weight and so forth does not add HP but can help in handling
and straight line acceleration. Removing the rear seat, spare tire,
and things like that.

Well, for any serious gain, you have to spend serious money. Here are
a few engine mods. I assume you don't care about suspension, handling
or braking right now. I would reccomend some slotted Brembo 4 pots, or
at least non-stock front brakes if you are going to be driving fairly
hard.

Start here: http://www.sentra.net

You are right, the exhaust and intake are a good place to start. Buy a
better air filter, open up the manifolds a little. You might want to
consider new manifolds and exhaust headers. The first comment is also
correct. Lose the weight. I don't know how much of a home mechanic you
are, but it seems like you have a good basic knowledge. A bunch of
little detail modifications can make a difference.

You might want to consider synthetic oil. Also, some people have found
gains of 10-50 horsepower by putting a dry sump oil pan on cars.
Fomula 1 cars use these. They might be avaliable for the Sentra. If
not, I know there are aftermarket oil pans with baffles. The key is
getting the oil out of the way of the crankshaft.

An underdrive pulley will gain 2-5 horses. If you are running a large
stereo, this is a bad idea, but you should have left that out for
weight reasons anyway.

If you buy high quality aftermakret airflow products, skip this. If
you are running stock manifolds then you might want to look at
something called extrude honing, to provide a smoother and bigger path
for air entering and exiting the engine. This is not cheap though.

The above might void any warranty you have. You might also be
violating certain laws defining what is street legal. If you are in
California, only ARB approved parts are legal. Also, demanding more of
any engine will shorten its lifespan. *Disclaimer done*
