Interested in comparing the most recent (2003 ideally) murder rates in
North American cities. Not just U.S. but must include Canada.

Would statistics for 2002 be sufficient, at least for Canada?

yes. So let's do 2002 stats for the U.S. also so I can do an apple to
apple comparison

Thanks!

The 2002 Canadian statistics that I've found relate to census
metropolitan areas of 100,000 or more. Likewise, there are statistics
for U.S. Census Metropolitan Stastical Areas (any population), as well
as for U.S. cities of 10,000 or more. (The statistics are for
"homicide" in Canada and "murder and non-negligent manslaughter" in
the U.S., but the defintions appear quite similar.)

Would you like the Canadian and U.S. metropolitan area statistics as the answer?

Hello nick_dg,

Here are the statistics:

1) "Table 6 -- Index of Crime by Metropolitan Statistical Area, 2002"
Federal Bureau of Investigation -- Uniform Crime Reports
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_02/xl/02tbl06.xls
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_02/html/web/offreported/02-table06A.html

The definition of "murder and nonnegligent manslaughter" for purposes
of this table is at the top of:

"Murder"
Federal Bureau of Investigation -- Uniform Crime Reports
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_02/html/web/offreported/02-nmurder03.html

The report as a whole is at:

"Crime in the United States - 2002"
Federal Bureau of Investigation -- Uniform Crime Reports
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/02cius.htm

2) "Homicides" (The Daily, Oct. 1, 2003)
Statistics Canada
http://www.statcan.ca/Daily/English/031001/d031001a.htm

The statistics are near the bottom of that page. The report's
definition of "homicide" is in the "Note to Readers" towards the top
of that page.

Search strategy:

Searched on Google for combinations of U.S. and Canadian cities and
the phrase "murder capital" to find out where the statistics were.

Browsed and searched (for terms such as "murder" and "homicide") on
the FBI and Statistics Canada web sites.
