I am looking for an environmentally friendly (low CO2 and smog
emmissions) car in Canada and have been very disappointed. There seem
to be a number of tantalizing choices on the horizon, but none that
would really satisfy my family's needs. Has anyone found an option I
have overlooked?
I have done quite a bit of research which I will set out below so you
don't repeat what I already know:
I know about the Honda/Toyota/Ford Hybrids. The Honda and Toyota have
small trunks and are expensive. I do not want to drive a Ford SUV.
There is lots of news about E85 gasoline in the US (especially in
Jesse Ventura's Minnesota) but just 1 public station in Canada (in
Ottawa -- I am in Toronto.) Even if I could get the fuel, I would be
limited to very few choices of cars. Few E85 cars are sold in Canada,
however, they can be imported from the US, where some Tauruses and
Chrysler Sebrings are equipped for this fuel, (although I wouldn't
otherwise consider these cars). US-made cars can be imported to Canada
duty free under NAFTA.
There is also biodiesel, which is available at 2 outlets in Toronto.
The problem with this is distance to the gas stations (I am in Don
Mills) and lack of car choice. The only diesels sold here are VWs and
they get poor reliability ratings from Consumer Reports. I have been
warned off them by a number of people who have owned them.
Is there anything I have missed, or am I doomed to pollute with everyone else?
