What is the range of value of most items shoplifted from a retailer such as Wal Mart? I suspect that most of the shoplifting is for those goods ranging in value from $10 to $200. Less expensive is not worth the risk and more expensive is probably too big to hide while getting out of the store. I will guess that 80% of all items shoplifted cost between $10 and $200. | |

Hi! Thanks for the question. It seems that your assumption is correct. However different surveys show some difference in the amounts. Hayes International pegs the following average prices of items acquired through shoplifting. 2001 - $111.46 2002 - $115.24 ?SHOPLIFTING? http://www.hayesinternational.com/ts_shplftng.html ?The report indicates that the average dollar loss per incident for EMPLOYEE THEFT is $1,341.02 and $207.18 for SHOPLIFTING? ?Crime Statistics? http://www.domesticspy.com/crime_statistics.htm Getting a specific range is really quite not appropriate in shoplifting since it happens in different environments. It could go from $3.68 to $412.97. ?Nationally, the most frequently stolen items (at least those confiscated from shoplifters) are tobacco products, athletic shoes, brand name apparel, designer jeans and intimate apparel, health & beauty aids, videos & compact discs. It is well documented that shoplifters target merchandise either for their own consumption or for a quick conversion to cash, so the items most frequently stolen tend to be expensive and in high demand. The study indicates that the average amount of theft per incident was $56.67, but the statistics probably have more relevancy when examined by retail vertical market. For example, the average theft in a drug store was $3.68, but in a consumer electronics/computer store the number jumped to $412.97! ?RELATED ARTICLES ON SHOPLIFTING? http://www.diogenesllc.com/shopliftingarticles.html Search terms used: shoplifting statistics figures I hope these links would help you in your research.
