Question ID: 356227
I am looking for a list of career counselors in the Silicon Valley. I
am a marketing and business development person in high tech (six years
of experience) and I am thinking about my next move. I want to talk
with someone who is very tuned in to what small-ish tech companies are
looking for, how to use my network to better effect, etc. I am _not_
looking for a high-end career person. I have an MBA, but it is not
from a prestigious school and I am not looking for a prestigious job.
I just want to work with a career counselor who will focus on the
practical aspects of picking a new direction and finding a new gig.
And I don't mind interviewing a few different counselors to find the
right one. But I need to get a list to start from. Thanks!

Hello alant-ga,

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I?m very familiar with the
career counseling resources available here. There used to be two
wonderful career centers (Career Action Center and Alumnae Resources)
that served the community for over 25 years that unfortunately closed
their doors a couple of years ago. The career counselors who were
associated with these organizations are still in business. I?m also
including some links to help you find local career centers that are
open to the public and offer local resources.

I know many of the career people listed in these resources and I?m
convinced that you will be able to find someone who will be able to
help you sort out your career goals and options. I suggest that you
review each of the local resources I?ve included and explore the list
of counselors to find someone who looks interesting. I heartily
endorse your intent to interview several to find someone whose skills
and style best fit your needs. Please ask for clarification if you
need additional help.

Best wishes for your career change.

Career Action Center
Career Counseling, Coaching, and Training

Although the Career Action Center has closed, career services are
still available from many independent career counselors and coaches.

The following people and organizations offer a wide range of services
for individuals and groups. The Career Action Center does not endorse
or take responsibility for any of the services offered. Please contact
them directly for current, detailed information, including pricing.

***** The Career Action Center served the South Bay for over 25 years
and was a world-renowned leader in providing community career
services. They had special expertise in serving people in high tech.
I?m personally acquainted with many of the career counselors listed
here and I?m sure several of them will be excellent for you. Be sure
to follow the links to the websites for many of the counselors listed
or simply call them to conduct a preliminary interview to see how they
respond to your needs.

Do you have a sense for which of the career counselors are most
appropriate for someone looking for a marketing/BD job in high tech?
Or can you recommend a short list?

Hello again alant-ga

All of the counselors listed on the Career Action Center referral list
are used to working with high tech employees. See my ?short list? for
counselors that I?m sure would be qualified to address you specific
needs. Good luck.

Thank you very much. One last thing -- can you recommend any good
sites that give solid, practical, no-nonsense tips on how to put
together a great job search? (I am big fan of Richard Bolles, for
example, because he is very practical.)

Clarification of Answer by czh-ga on 04 Jun 2004 18:51 PDT
Hello alant-ga,

Dick Bolles was a pioneer in down-to-earth career advice with his What
Color is Your Parachute. You might want to check out his website for a
refresher. JobStar is great for local resources. I suggest that you
browse the Google Directory on Careers and Job Search to get an
overview of what?s available.

I don?t know where you are in your career transition so it?s difficult
to make a recommendation on the best resources to use. I suggest that
you review the materials I?ve provided and then post another question
for more focused information. Just put my name in the subject line and
I will be happy to help you further.

Best wishes for a great career.
