My spell checker has mysteriously stopped working, well not quite...
It stills checks the spelling but I am not able to add new spellings
into the dictionary. (the 'add to dictionary' appears to be disabled)

For example my company name keeps coming up spelt wrong... I use XP.

IBB

Dear IBB

I had a similar very frustrating problem with my spellchecker in Word
97 because my custom dictionary exceeded the permitted size limit (64
KB). I got round it by creating an additional custom dictionary.

As I don't use XP I'm afraid I don't know whether the solution will
work in your case. If it does, please let me know and I'll post an
official answer.

Kind regards

It worked, I just added a new custom dictionary and there was no
problem. I notice the existing one wasn't ticked perhaps that was the
problem. Perhaps you could broaden your answer so people with the same
issue will know exactly what to do. Regardless, question is
answered... Cheers, ibb

Dear IBB

I?m glad that worked. To expand, as you rightly suggest (my posting
above was indeed on the brief side):

The custom dictionaries that are part of the Microsoft Word 97
spellchecker (and other versions of Word) are restricted to a file
size of 64 K. It is not possible to add more words to the custom
dictionary once this size limit has been reached.

Adding a second custom dictionary is a way of getting round this
restriction. To do this in Word 97:

1. run the spellchecker (F7)
2. click on Options
3. click on Dictionaries
4. click on New
5. create a custom dictionary by typing a file name ending in .DIC, and Save it
6. when running a spell check make sure all the custom dictionaries
are ticked (you can confirm this by clicking on Options, Dictionaries)

I hope this is useful. Please ask for a question clarification if you
require any further help.
Kind regards

An answer that gives me what I want is an excellent answer. I
suggested that he expand the response for future reference from
others. He did that. Good job.
