I am looking for a cable (Nikon MC-31) for a Nikon F100 Camera which
connects the camera to my computer.

Everywhere I check it is backordered or discontinued. The software I
already have (Photo Secretary II for F100).

I would like either a direct source to purchase this cable from or a
way to get a detailed "pin out" for the cable itself so that it can be
fabricated.

Hi Sandych,

There certainly must be some serious demand for these cables because I
found, as you did, that they're almost never in stock. After some
hunting around I found a couple of online retailers that appear to
have the cable, or at least don't say that it's out of stock. These
are listed below.

Cameras.com ($103.50)
http://www.cameras.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=EPL&Product_Code=9694&Product_Count=&Category_Code=

Smile Photo Video ($99.95)
http://www.smilephotovideo.com/details.cfm?store=Photo&category=Camera%20Accessories&itemno=NIMC31

While it's possible that they have the cable there's also a chance
that they're out too, since I wasn't able to confirm with them by
phone. Since you suggested that a detailed pin-out would work just as
well, I found this site: is here:
http://www.k-i-s.net/article.php?article=20 which offers detailed
instructions on how to build your own cable.

There is a nice high-quality, colour pdf of the cable pin-outs here as
well: http://www.perfect4me.com/Products/mynikon/MC31-Athisarn1.pdf

A further diagram for building the cable using the Maxim 232/232A chip
is here: http://members.aol.com/khancock/pilot/nbuddy/MC31.pdf

This page: http://www.amedesign.ro/F100.htm offers instructions on
building a data cable for the F100, though the link I followed to it
referred to this as being an MC-33 cable. From my understanding the
difference is that the MC-31 is a 25-pin cable and the MC-33 is a
9-pin. This guide provides pin-outs for both connectors so it might
still be useful to you.

Since all these cables seem to require the MAX232 tranciever chip, you
may want to visit this site to purchase it:
http://www.futurlec.com/ICMaxim.shtml or this site:
http://www.iguanalabs.com/232Kit.htm which has a kit which includes
the controller, a 9-pin connector and some resistors for $6.

Finally, if building the cable ends up being too complicated, there is
a fellow who builds compatible cables and sells them, but he appears
to also have availability issues at the moment. Still, you may wish
to contact him. His page is here:
http://www.mts123.szm.com/cord/link!.htm

I hope this helps you out.

hello

please note it is most important to get/build a cable with a Nikon
connector, otherwise you might get it installed wrong and damage your
camera ;-(
I saw few cables that uses an 8 pin connector that you can get wrong with
its direction on camera, so be very carefull with it.

I found mine at:
 http://www.schneordesign.com/Avi/F100/diy_05.htm
very good build quality with a Nikon connector. Cable arrived fast
and was well packed. I'm very happy with it.

If you want to build it yourself, that site has some very good info at:
http://www.schneordesign.com/Avi/F100/diy_03.htm
