I am trying to learn as much as I can about the Battle of Bladensburg
Commadore Joshua Barney Memorial. I know the memorial is in
Bladensburg, Maryland.
However besides that, I know very little about this memorial. Besides
learning about the memorial I also need to know where the memorial is
located and how I might be able to get there on a Saturday.

Dear stephenh-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. Here is a small photo of the Battle of Bladensburg Commodore
Joshua Barney Memorial located near what is now the Fort Lincoln
Cemetery in Historic Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Bladensburg,
Maryland. The Town of Bladensburg, Maryland, is located within Prince
George's County - approximately one mile Northeast of Washington, D.C.

PORT TOWNS

The memorial commemorates the battle on August 24, 1814, when
Commodore Joshua Barney and a small contingent of Marines and sailors
bravely stayed behind and fought a courageous rear guard action on the
heights in order to protect a larger group of soldiers in their
retreat from opposing forces. Many of the men involved died here and
others, including Barney, were captured. The British so admired
Commodore Barney?s bravery in that skirmish that British General
Robert Ross eventually paroled him, but in spite of this he died some
time later of the injuries he received in the conflict.

I am still trying to find out when the memorial was placed in the
cemetery. I have called, written, and look on the internet for this
question without any luck.

If you can find out for me when this monument to Joshua Barney was
officially placed in the cemetery I will give "YOU" a large "bonus"
tip.

Dear stephenh-ga;

The monument would have to have been dedicated and placed some time
after 1912 as the Fort Lincoln Cemetery where the monument is located
was established that year.

In view of this, I decided to contact the Fort Lincoln Cemetery in
Bladensburg, Maryland to see if they could tell me when the monument
you spoke of was dedicated. As best their records reflect the monument
was part of the 1972 dedication by the Prince George?s Jaycees. They
faxed me what they had on the history of the area, which says in part:

?The Battle of Bladensburg memorial, located across from the mausoleum
honors Commodore Joshua Barney, who made the supreme sacrifice in
defense of this country and his detachment of marines for their
distinguished display of valor and gallantry on August 24, 1812. The
Prince George?s Jaycees have held annual services at this site to
commemorate the Battle of Bladensburg. During the 1972 services the
new Star Spangled Banner Trail was dedicated by the National Capital
Area Council of Boy Scouts. The historic trail, hiked by Scouts, runs
from Benedict to Patuxent River, where British troops landed during
the War of 1812, to Bladensburg, and then to Fort Lincoln Cemetery and
the monument commemorating those American troops who lost their lives
in defense of the Nation?s Capital.?

To the best of their knowledge the monument was part of this 1972
dedication and was so placed in order to mark the end of the trail (no
pun intended) and to honor those who died there.

Here are some close-ups of the face of the memorial:

Great ! I wish that there was some way that I can get that document
that they faxed to you. Do you think that maybe you could go a little
further to try to find out the exact month/year that it was dedicated
? Maybe from a newspaper or by contacting the Prince George's Jaycees
to see what they might know. If you can find out, YOU WILL GET the
"bonus Tip"

please try to do whatever you can !!!! I need the information.

Maybe if you can tell me whom sent it to you (name of person)or
something else that might allow me to idenifty that person, I could
call them at the cemetery and get it myself. Do you think it would be
possible.

Thank you again..

I contacted the cemetery by using the telephone number on this link

DC CEMETERIES: FORT LINCOLN CEMETERY
http://www.geocities.com/araxnoullis/DC_Cemeteries/lincoln.htm

I was transferred 3 times before speaking to a man who simply answered
"hello" and did not identify himself. He faxed me the only information
he said he had, which said word-for-word what I indicated (among other
things that were not really relevant). I believe the man I spoke to
might have been African-American but I cannot be certain. Beyond that
all I can tell you was the first woman I spoke to was a receptionist
and the second woman I spoke to said she'd tranfer me to "someone who
can help you". And she did. The man did say that someone who knew much
more about the history of the cemetery was not there at the moment and
that he might have more information. He did not name that man either.
Perhaps if you call the cemetery yourself (as you know researchers
cannot contact customers directly or I'd send it to you myself) he
will fax you the same document, but it is not an historical document,
merely an brief description of the events in somewhat of a press
release form.

Sorry-- As of now, I can't give you the "bonus tip" since you couldn't
find out for me when the monument was dedicated month/year. I am
afraid to say that was the most important aspect I needed. The bonus
will stand if you can ever find it for me.

I have contacted the Capital Council of Boy Scouts to see if they can
shed some light on a date. In the meantime shall I go ahead and claim
the opening fee then since I did answer your original question?

No I would rather for you to wait until the answer can be answered.
Because a "bonus tip" will be coming on the way too. If the answer
can ever be found.

I have done everything I can do on your SECONDARY question though your
ORIGINAL inquiry has clearly been satisfied according to the fee that
attracted me to it in the first place. While I'm somewhat confused by
this sudden turn of events, I wish you luck. Perhaps someone will come
along who is interested in the promise of your "bonus tip".

I might suggest you repost your second question as a seperate post and
see if you have any takers. Perhaps someone who is more familiar with
the local area will pick up the question and be able to provide some
better contact information. In the meantime, if the Boy Scourts call
me back I'll post what I learn here for you.
