I performed an extensive amount of general research on grapevines
regarding winter kill and how to assess damage, what to do if they are
damaged and following year preventive measures.
The least invasive way to determine live versus dead wood is to
lightly scrape the bark with your fingernail and look for green live
tissue just beneath the bark.
The following 3 articles from Cornell Vitaculture provide excellent
information on winter kill.

Even though the following article is about growing grapes in
Northwestern Nevada, it is a good general reference, because the area
also has cold winters and a short growing season.
