you might remember the hit "voodoo ray" by "a guy called gerald"... i read somewhere that the "voodoo ray" vocal was taken from a dudley moore and peter cook comedy record... but i have never found out (a) whether this is true or (b) which song it was taken from. so the question is: what was the original song from which the "voodoo ray" sample was taken? |

There is no answer at this time. |

Dear Teticio Afraid this information may not be available on the web. All I have found is a snippet on a Peter Cook appreciation page at: http://stabbers.muon.posiweb.net/stabbers/html/spiggott.htm which confirms a slight link between him and a Guy called Gerald. |

Afraid I can't find anything definitive either, but I have a sneaking suspicion it is from this song "Bo Duddley" http://www.phespirit.info/derekandclive/dclive09.htm search for voodoo on the page "voodoo rage" |

I cannot identify the source of the female vocal track on "Voodoo Ray," but I believe the same singer performs backup vocals on P.J. Proby's cover of "In the Air Tonight." It is my belief that the male voice intoning the words "voodoo ray" is multiple electronic alterations of Peter Cook's voice only (no Dudley Moore this time, although the two certainly recorded together on many occasions.) In the 1984 film "Supergirl," Cook plays a minor baddie named Nigel. A "voodoo ray" is one of many weapons brought into use against the titular superheroine. I speculate that Gerald Simpson lifted Cook's plummy utterance of the words "voodoo ray" from the soundtrack of "Supergirl," and proceeded to spin it into an elaborate techno treat. |

ALL of the vocals in Voodoo Ray were recorded specially for the track. The singer to the scat vocals was interviewed on British TV few months back (cant remember her name). The robotic voice chanting 'Voodoo Ray' was also recorded for the track, which im GUESSING could be Gerald Simpson the composer of the original track. I cant guarantee i, but try keyword NANOPLASMIC and CHAPTER AND THE VERSE There could be some links there. Dont damn me if nothing comes up!!! The |

i think that the "voodoo ray" sample is probably from the derek and clive record - i'll soon find out as it is coming in the post! i like the supergirl idea - but i'm not sure i can face sitting through the film to find out if it is THE sample or not! i think gerald did a later take of the song for which he re-recorded all the vocal samples. also a version called "voodoo rage" which might be a reference to the peter cook "voodoo rage" sample. anyway, thanks everyone for your help! i'm not sure there is much more to this answer! would already give it 5 stars if i could...! thanks |

The 'popular' version I've read was that the track was originally going to be "Voodoo Rage", but there wasn't enough room in his sampler for the complete phrase, hence why it came out as "Voodoo Ray". |

the derek and clive live record arrived and the sample is *definitely* from this. thanks for the info - particularly liked the imaginative super girl theory! :-) |
