I have removed my hard drive from my primary laptop because windows xp was crashing constantly and I need to transfer the files from this hard drive to CDR, before I format and reinstall. I have mounted this hard drive into an external usb 2.0 hard drive case. I have plugged this newly created external usb hard drive into my secondary laptop running windows XP. This new external hard drive appears as Drive "E". I can click around in the folders on this newly mounted drive. Here is the problem: I cannot access my "owner" folder on the external hard drive. This original hard drive, was password protected for the "owner". I have this password, that is not the problem. Everytime I click on "owner" on this newly mounted hard drive, it gives me the error of : "E:/Documents and Settings/ Owner is not accessible Access is denied." I would hope it would prompt me to input my password, but it doesn't. I can access the rest of the hard drive fine...all the shared documents / files / and even run programs on this newly mounted hard drive, but I cannot access my "owner" folder, which coincidentally contains all my good files. I need to access my "owner" folder which is password protected. Thank you. |

First, try taking ownership of the folder. Right-click the Documents and Settings\Owner folder, go to the Security tab, click on "Advanced", go to the "Owner" tab. Assign the owner as yourself. More detailed instructions, Google: "windows xp" "documents and settings" "not accessible" ://www.google.com/search?q=%22windows+xp%22+%22documents+and+settings%22+%22not+accessible%22&btnG=X http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810881 Google: "windows xp" ntfs permissions problem google.com/search?q=%22windows+xp%22+ntfs+permissions+problem&btnG=X If neccessary, you can bypass NTFS permissions: "boot to knoppix linux from a cdrom, it breaks all NTFS permissions.." http://www.jinxhackwear.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6359 |
