Question ID: 358548
I would like the geographical mailing addresses of national and state
PBS radio shows which accept and play from time to time unsolicited music
CD'S. I am also interested in the same information for CBC radio
shows both provincially and nationally in Canada. Note I want mailing
addresses primarily, but e-mail addresses can be included in the
report. From June 12 to 27, I will be unable to respond to any
results.

Hello, kate7,
Compiling the mailing addresses of CBC and PBS radio stations in the
United States and Canada will be a large research task in itself.
Aside from this, you are asking a researcher to call or write to every
one of these stations and find out whether they will accept an
unsolicited music CD. Not only would this incur additional expense
(via phone call) or time (to find the right contact person) but email
or calls might not be returned. Therefore, a researcher could
potentially spend not only hours, but weeks, contacting stations on
your behalf with no guarantee of payment for their time.
As an alternative, would you be willing to have a researcher compile
the mailing addresses (and phone numbers, if available) of as many of
these radio stations as possible (again, a large task in itself) so
that you might contact them yourself or, simply send them an
unsolicited CD along with a letter explaining your talents? You may
have better luck if you contact the individual stations yourself,
since personal contact is far more valuable than a third-party
researcher phone call or email.
Please let us know if I, or another researcher, can help you in this way.

One more thing....in many cases, it might also be possible to provide
you with the name of the most likely person to contact concerning your
CD's.

Clarification of Question by kate7-ga on 10 Jun 2004 07:42 PDT
umiat-ga has requested clarification of my question. I do not expect
any contact by the researcher with the shows. I want the mailing
addresses and producer names of shows which appear LIKELY to consider
unsolicited musical material; for instance the evening news would not,
but Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion in the U.S or the shows
Bandwidth and Metro morning on CBC radio would. I have had good luck
submitting material in the past to public radio shows but realize it
is difficult to source all the shows paricularly the regional ones
which are likely to play unsolicited material and no central registry
of shows seems to exist. We have a newly produced and professionally
packaged CD of roots/country material which we would like to blanket
mail to any shows likely to screen it and give it air-time. We realize
that from a practical point of view some shows may be submitted which
do not play music submitted in this way, and to make the researchers
job more feasable we are prepared for "misses". We are also prepared
to consider more money based on a reasonable submission from the
researcher about what the task involves. The producer of the show is
usely te best contact person. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello, kate!

There are some additional problems in that many of the PBS and CBC
radio stations do not have a comprehensive listing of programs on
their website. To search through and find every PBS and CBS website,
find their mailing address, and then **additionally search through all
the programs (if they are there) is a daunting task.

*If there are no programs listed on the radio website, or anything
that looks promising, do you still want the address of the station?

*And, correct me if I am wrong, do you still want a researcher to
search through all fifty states and Canada and submit contacts for
each and every public radio station available?

I am certainly willing to compile the land mail and email addresses
"when possible", and try to identify shows and contacts (if availble)
that might be applicable, but I cannot be sure how comprehensive
individual show and contact name information will be. I don't want to
invest many hours on a "potential" list, only to find that you feel I
have found the wrong contact names, wrong types of programs, or not
enough programs at all. As I said, many of the sites I have already
viewed do not even have a comprehensive program list. That is why I
thought it might be wise to follow up with an email or written letter
on your end once you have the addresses.

Some examples:

Here is a site that DOES have program listings. However, based on your
CD description, I do not know if the "Diverse Music" show might be
willing to play your material. However, in this instance I could give
you the contact names.
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kunc/guide.guidemain

Another station that is affiliated with NPR and PIR has a program like
the following: http://www.utahpublicradio.org/folk.html as well as
program links on the following page:
http://www.utahpublicradio.org/programs.html

Here is a PBS station that has listings, but I see nothing that jives with
your CD. http://wsui.uiowa.edu/program.htm

And then there are a lot of CBC and PBS radio stations that have no
program information, or websites. For instance, I have already
manually looked up several on this CBC list, and there are no
websites:
http://cbc.radio-canada.ca/htmfr/stations/atlantique.htm

The purpose of this additional clarification is simply to know whether
you want a researcher to proceed, with your understanding that many
websites and addresses are simply unavailable, and program and contact
information is lacking. It will take a considerable amount of time
just to look up station information, only to find out that it is
unavailable on the internet.

As far as pricing, the highest posting price for a question is $200
with a $200 tip. As far as the time guidelines are concerned:

"$200 - Researchers will typically spend extensive amounts of time (4
hours plus) and do highly thorough research for questions at the $200
price level
https://answers.google.com/answers/pricing.html

At this point, I cannot even give you a ballpark of how many hours it
will take to dig up stations in fifty states, and all across Canada.
Add to that a perusal of each station, trying to find shows and
contact information, and you are requesting several days worth of
research!

If you are willing to compromise with some sort of reasonable number
of listings, it will be worthwile to proceed. And, if you are willing
to accept mailing address or website contacts that have no program
information, please clarify that as well.

Let me know what you think so I know if I can help.

Thanks - umiat

Iknew it was going to be tricky and it certainly is. Perhaps
restricting the list to 200 to 300 listings. In Canada on CBC we did a
sample with shows Richardsons Roundup(nationally braodcast), and
Saskatchewan Morning(regional) and got air play on both those shows;
you might see how easily those programs show up on cbc.ca. Enclosures
with cd could also request it be forwarded to any producer who might
utilize such material. The cd will be in an attractive envelope with
enclosures. As i write this I am now thinking that if you were to come
up with a sample of 50, or 75, or 100 ??? likely
candidates($200.00worth of your efforts), we can try them and see how
we do and perhaps do more based on the results. I know this is an
experiment and willnot hold you accountable for dead ends, just look
for your best efforts, and some distribution facross both countries.

Just another thought, though I've not ever looked into this, but there
are very likely discussion sights where music can be posted and down
loaded which list or share radio stations that will play unsolicited
material.

For now, I am simply going through state by state and province by
province, culling out stations that look like they might be open to
unsolicited music. Not because they have said so (although I did run
across one which did post a notice as such) but because they are
primarily college public stations or smaller stations that have their
own programs besides the NPR stuff. Most of the NPR affiliates look
pretty closed to anything other than their own distributed shows.
I will look into your suggestion, however, to see if anything pops up!

When you mention "roots" music, what classification would you put that
in? Is it original, and is it still along country lines, or is it more
of a folk genre? This is all your original material, correct?

Hello, kate7-ga!

I have compiled 59 radio station contacts that have shows which seem
to be compatible with your music. Many of them accept unsolicited
music CD's. I had to compile this list by going through a radio
database and visiting each website individually, scrolling through
program schedules and descriptions, finding the contacts and
researching submissions. It was no easy task - hence, the reason there
are not more stations on my lists. I am sure there are more out there,
but this work, in and of itself, took in the neighborhood of 15 hours!
Therefore, you might want to try these and see how they pan out. If
you want to go further in a future question, please don't hesitate to
ask.

I tried to provide a good representation of areas of the United
States, and did a pretty thorough search of Canadian public stations.
Most of the public stations affiliated with CBC and PBS/NPR have their
set programs, so I had to look for the more independent public
stations. I think you will find some good referrals below.

speaking, only CDs and LPs will get airplay from our station's ops
(i.e. "DJs".) Cassettes and DATs and other formats may be submitted,
but odds are they won't get played at much, if at all. Unless you
hound the Music Directors, receipt of submissions will not be
acknowledged. We receive roughly 100 submissions a week and we're all
full-time students; it's tough enough for us to tread water, let alone
provide value-added niceties such as personalized e-mails letting you
know we got your disc. If you sent it to the above address, chances
are we did get it."

"The Music Director pulls CDs and LPs randomly from our bin of
submissions. We don't have "Loud Rock" MDs or "RPM" MDs, etc., so
there's no need to address any submission to a specific individual
unless you've made arrangements with that person to review your album
ahead of time."

"Syracuse Community Radio primarily promotes music from new and local
artists, small record companies, and material which receives little
(if any) airplay in the United States. We are committed to ensuring
that the vast majority of all music played on our station comes from
sources other than the major record distributors."

Program Guide
http://www.wxxe.org/programs/

How can I submit my own music for playing on your station?
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Direct your submission to the Music Director. Because we are
basically a free-format station where the programmers choose their own
music to play, we can not guarantee airtime to anyone. It really
depends if your music fits into an existing show and if the person
doing that show is aware of it. That's why we strongly suggest
directing your submissions where possible to individual programmers
playing that type of music. If you're unsure who that might be, simply
direct it generally to the Music Director, who will try to determine
that for you. Currently, we do not chart with CMJ or any other
charting service."

After Midnight - a Possibility

on rare, marginalized and radical material. Host Dale Gowin plays
everything from rare old-time country from the 20's and 30's, country
oldies from the 40's and '50s, rare material from the folk revival of
the '60s, and tradition-oriented singer-songwriters and folk musicians
including many independent and small-label releases. He features
blocks of bluegrass gospel, acoustic blues, Western Swing, honky-tonk,
Appalachian roots music, Celtic and British folk music, and
cutting-edge acoustic music that is not easily categorizable."

the people who bring them to life. I play songs from some of the
greatest songwriters of all time, including John Prine, Lyle Lovett,
Fred Eaglesmith, Willie P. Bennett, and many more. Along with the
legends, I also focus on the the hottest new writers of today. Every
week, I try to have a different musical guest who can give us some
insight into their songs and their personality. Previous guests
include: David Francey, Paul MacLeod, Kris Demeanor, Vance Gilbert,
John Mayer, and many more. Also, I'm often joined by local
singer/songwriters in the studio for a talk and some live music. Local
favourites like The Wailin' Jennys, Monica Schroeder, Scott Nolan, and
many more have all stopped by. If you're interested in great music on

"Send your music attention to our Music Director, Jessica Whyte. Make

Jessica's tracking hours are Thursdays from 12pm - 5pm, Atlantic

hours, so mark that day on your calendar. All tracking is done by

Address all submissions to:

* Jewel case, its all about the simple jewel case. Band name readable on the spine.
[if the scissors and glue need to be used, we're not going to be happy]
* Please include your band/label name in the return address.
* Singles? Not so good. We don't have the space, either wait till you
have an EP or release that baby on vinyl (there's always room for
vinyl - its skinnier right?)
* We don't need glossy photos, 10-page press kits, FiloFolders,
videos, DVDs, or copies of your handwritten poems. One sheet and a CD
- please don't waste your money on mailing giant packages (though
sometimes we do love an especially good glossy pic...open shirts
preferred).
* Stickers? good. Candy? good. Whistles and Frisbees? Not so good.
* Check http://www.uoguelph.ca/cfru/music.shtml for some good hints
and tracking/mailing tips.
